*Long*, thinking about it, it could be just a catch phrase, a metaphor, figure of speech, etc.

Kick the tires and light the fires could reflect an aircraft takeoff (have I heard that quote in that game Top Gun: Hornet's Nest?).

"Kick the tires and light the fires, big daddy." Harry Connick Jr. (Captain Jimmy Wilder) in Independence Day

My take on it is that it is an other way to say "lets get moving"...

or "get the show on the road"

etc..

kick the tires refers to actually kicking the tires on the aircraft to check for proper inflation and condition, and light the fires is for starting the engines (turbine type with the big fire inside), if memory serves me corectly, fighter pilot talk.

like woods talk for hunting, piss on the fire and call the dogs, put the fire out(best way is to piss on it fer ya was up all nite drinking and have to go BAD) and call the dogs fer they like to wonder off.

all still say the same, lets get moving.
