Worldwide Cartoon Protests
Updated: 20:18, Saturday February 18, 2006
At least 25 people have been killed during violent demonstrations in Libya and Nigeria over the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed.
Around 1,000 protesters set fire to the Italian consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and hurled rocks and bottles. At least ten people were killed.
Police with Kalashnikov rifles fired live ammunition and tear gas at the angry mob but could not get them to disperse for six hours.
In Nigeria, at least 15 people died in the city of Maiduguri as churches, hotels, shops and vehicles were torched.
Angry mobs turned on Christians as police tried to break up demonstrations.
The Libya riot was sparked by Italian cabinet minister Roberto Calderoli who wore a T-shirt featuring the cartoons.
He has now resigned to "stop the shameful exploitation which in these hours has been directed against me."
Libya condemned the attack on embassy property and broadcast pictures of the violence.
The death toll was reported to be higher than that of any other riot against the caricatures during the past two weeks of demonstrations across the Muslim world.
A Pakistani Muslim cleric and his followers have offered a $1m bounty to anyone who kills the Danish cartoonists who drew the caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.
Maulana Yousef Qureshi, speaking from Pehsawar, said he had personally offered to pay a bounty of 500,000 rupees ($8,400) and two of his congregation put up additional rewards of $1m and one million rupees plus a car.
Thousands of Muslims gathered for a peaceful protest march in London.
Around 7,000 people gathered near Pakistan's capital of Islamabad and 5,000 others protested in the southern city of Quetta.
Police arrested 125 protesters for violating a ban on rallies in eastern Pakistan and arrested 30 others after firing tear gas to disperse a protest in the southern city of Karachi.
Denmark has temporarily closed its embassy in Pakistan amid the demonstrations and urged Danes to leave the country.
