Flu Blamed For Deaths
Updated: 07:24, Saturday October 29, 2005

Two more suspected human deaths from bird flu have been reported in Vietnam.

The virus has already killed more than 60 people in southern Asia - about 40 of them in Vietnam.

The Tuoi Tre newspaper quoted a report from a hospital in the central province of Quang Binh as saying two patients who showed symptoms of bird flu infection had died in the past week.

The report said the victims, a 14-year-old girl and a 26-year-old man, had eaten duck and a chicken's egg around a week before they fell ill.

The girl died on October 23 and the man on October 26.

Doctors at the hospital said they both had severe respiratory problems, fever and lung infections - symptoms similar to bird flu.

There are worldwide fears the flu may develop into a lethal strain that is passed easily between humans, sparking a pandemic.

Three birds have died of avian flu while in quarantine in the UK, but the Government says there is currently no risk to the public.

It has said it will produce a vaccine for everyone in the country in the event of a lethal strain that threatens humans on a large scale developing.
