Huge Blasts Hit Baghdad

Eleven people have reportedly been killed when three large blasts hit a Baghdad hotel housing foreign journalists.

At least 15 people were also injured when three car bombs exploded.

One bomb was reported to be a cement-mixing truck packed with explosives.

The blasts hit the Palestine Hotel in the city centre - with the nearby Sheraton Hotel also feeling the impact.

Debris was scattered over a wide area and huge plumes of smoke could be seen rising into the sky.

The Al Jazeera network said eleven people had been killed, quoting Iraqi security forces.

At least three photographers were injured and taken away by ambulance, according to the Associated Press.

Two television workers inside the hotel also sustained minor injuries.

Automatic weapons fire was reportedly heard just after the explosions - although this was thought to be Iraqi forces firing at random.

Sky News correspondent Lisa Holland said the hotel would be an obvious target for insurgents.

"It's exactly the thing insurgents would have been planning for," she said.

The blasts occurred before the evening Iftar meal which breaks the Muslim fast during the holy month of Ramadan.
