[Fake e-mails] Telemarketers Vs Cell phones
Quote:
Own a cell phone?
By Daily News staff
No need to worry about more telemarketing calls
Have you received an email that warns of a barrage of unwanted telemarketing calls on your cell phone? Most begin with: "Just a reminder . . . " and claim the new wave of calls will quickly use up your minutes and cost you money when you are charged for the telemarketing calls. If this sounds familiar, rest assured that telemarketing to cell phone numbers has always been illegal and in most cases will remain illegal. There is no cut-off date or deadline for registering cell phone numbers, according to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Recent email campaigns are urging consumers to place their cell phone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry or the Wisconsin Do Not Call List, usually with a time limit recommended to beat the unwanted calls. FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers when calling cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the telemarketing industry.
The federal government does not maintain a national registry specifically for cell phone numbers. Personal cell phone users have always been able to add their numbers to the same Registry consumers use to register their land lines, where it will remain for five years before re-entering or removing.
You can add your cell phone number to the National Do Not Call Registry by visiting www.donotcall.gov or calling (toll-free) 1-888-382-1222. Business-to-business calls are not covered under the registry.

if you get a e-mail about telemarketers being able to start calling your cellphone soon and you get charge for air time, it not going to happen at all in the USA.

other cell-phone alarts news:
First Coast News
JACKSONVILLE, FL -- First Coast News has learned people all over the First Coast got calls Tuesday from a company using the name "Vacation Reservation Center." They offered a discount getaway for the whole family.
Some folks who got the calls say they came through on their cell phones. But here's the thing: our investigation has discovered there's a law protecting people from getting telemarketing calls on their cell phones.
The call was a bitter surprise for Tom Smith. He was working around the house Tuesday, waiting on a critical call from the animal hospital. That call would tell him whether his sick cat would survive the night.
His cell phone rang - and on the other end: a prerecorded sales pitch.
"I thought it was the vet calling," Smith says, "I answered the phone and just immediately knew that it was a solicitation."
Phones across the First Coast lit up like that Tuesday. A company calling itself the "Vacation Reservation Center" called numbers all over the 904 area code.
According to the federal government, every time a telemarketer's call connects to a cell phone, that telemarketer breaks the law.
The Federal Communications Commission says it's illegal for telemarketers to use their systems to call your cell phone.
No matter what they try to sell you, if they use a computer to dial your number -- which is standard procedure -- the FCC says they're breaking the law and could face a fine of up to $11,000 per call.
"It's an invasion of your privacy, quite honestly," Smith says, "If I'm looking for something, I get into the phone, I get into the yellow pages and look and call somebody."
For now, Tom Smith plans to ignore any numbers he doesn't already know, as he waits for the call that really matters.
First Coast News tried talking to the "Vacation Reservation Center" folks. The company gave out a Fort Lauderdale number during its sales pitch.
When we called the number and identified ourselves, the person said we had called a private home - even though she answered the phone "reservations."
If you get a call like this, don't hesitate to file a complaint with the FCC by clicking here.
Try to have the date of the call, the name of the company that called you, and its phone number.
