Japanese govt slapped over textbook adoption

BEIJING, July 14 (Xinhuanet) -- China said here Thursday that the Japanese government is "unshirkably" responsible for the adoption by local authority of a history textbook to whitewash Japan's war past.

Local education authority in east Japan city of Otawara decided on Tuesday to adopt a history textbook compiled by a right-wing group at a total of 12 municipal junior high schools.

"It even tries in vain to overturn its hisory of aggression," Liu added.

Otawara became the first municipal government in Japan to adopt history and civics studies textbooks compiled by the Japanese Society for History Textbook Reform and published by the Fusosha Publishing Inc.

The textbook denies Japan's militarism past and Japanese army's atrocities on Asian people, and the textbook distorts history and whitewashes Japan's aggression war as "a war of liberating Asia".

"The entry of this kind of textbook into classroom cannot but mislead and poison the Japanese juvenile," said Liu at the regular press conference.

"It must be pointed out that the Japanese government has to take unshirkable responsibility for this," underscored the spokesman.

Liu warned that the Japanese side should educate its young generation with a correct view of history in line with taking highly responsible for history and the future.

"This conduces to improving Japan's relations with its Asian neighbors and its international image, and complies with Japan's own interests," said the spokesman.

I thinks it's unjust and considerably wrong not to teach their children the truth of their history. I'm not saying they have done alot of bad things. Wouldn't you be upset if everything you were taught to believe was softened and sifted to only learn bits and pieces. Like leave out Pearl Harbor and Beijing.

Could you say they are trying to control peoples minds to make them a more peaceful, prosperous and more generally happy society?

This has been a long running issue with the Japanese and their failure to admit their guilt for the terrible atrocitys they comitted during the second world war.

The rape of Nanking is one such atrocity which in some Japanese textbooks is referred to as an example of "over zealousness" by Japanese troops, the slaughter of over a 100,000 people and the mass rape of countless Chinese women and even children is "airbrushed" out of their history books and never mentioned.

The Japanese have been very reluctant to pay compensation to allied prisoners of war who were forced to do hard labour under the most brutal of regimes and without even the pretence of decent treatment.

Until the Japanese are willing to go through the same soul searching and acceptance of their guilt as the German nation has done this will continue to be a disgrace the entire Japanese race will have to live with.

Incidentally my uncle Albert fought the Japanese in Burma and to this day in his 86th year he still has nightmares over what he saw..... to him and many veterans from the war in the far east "the only good jap is a dead jap" remains to this day all to true!

I remember the movie"The Deer Hunter"..and I will never forget seeing it...I was just a laddy then...
