Interesting! Why Coffee Wakes You Up

Interesting! Why Coffee Wakes You Up

When you're drowsy and need to stay awake, chances are you reach for a steaming mug of coffee or tea. And voila! You get a second wind. Why? Here comes the science. When we are awake for a long time, our brain releases a chemical called adenosine and that in turn makes us feel sleepy by calming the brain's arousal centers. It's the brain's way of saying nighty-night. When you drink a cup of coffee or tea, it blocks the adenosine, according to researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

The takeaway: Coffee will wake you up, but you're also conducting your very own neuroscience experiment when you drink anything with caffeine in it, according to lead researcher Robert W. Greene, M.D. The magic ingredients that block the adenosine are the caffeine in coffee and soft drinks and the theophylline in tea. MedPage Today reports that the news, which was published in the journal Neuron, holds an intriguing possibility for discovering a new treatment for insomnia. Now that researchers know how coffee disrupts the brain's chemical bath of adenosine, they may be able to find ways to manipulate its production up or down to provide a more natural sleep aid.

Coffee won't keep you up forever because adenosine isn't the brain's only way to get you to slow down and go to sleep. We human beings are hardwired to sleep eight hours a day. What happens when we don't do this? No matter the reason, when we deprive our bodies of sleep, there are significant physical and mental consequences. Dr. Rafael Pelayo of Stanford University's Sleep Disorder Clinic doesn't mince words. Sleep deprivation is dangerous, he told Healthology Inc.

This is what happens to your body if it's deprived of sleep:
* You have problems with memory and concentration.
* You have problems finding the right word.
* You get irritable.
* Neurotransmitters in the brain become altered.
* Children's growth will be stunted.
* You become more susceptible to infection.
* At its extreme, sleep deprivation can lead to death.

While eight hours of sleep has long been considered the gold standard for pillow time, many of us can't sleep that long as we juggle the multiple demands of work and family. But be careful how much sleep time you lose on a regular basis. Surprisingly, if you sleep six hours a night, that's considered too little and could lead to sleep deprivation, according to researchers from the Penn State College of Medicine. The optimal amount of sleep? Seven to eight hours, according to a Boston University study.

I drink a pot every morning to get going. Sometimes with sugar sometimes without. Never any cream or milk though. I also love tea but I don't brew it as much as I used to. I've got a real nice KRUPS Premuim coffee maker I like to use.

I am a coffee drinker too brozo. I drink Starbucks House Blend and just tried thier Expresso Roast.. and liked it.but its a little rich ..I have tried a lot of coffee and Starbucks is expensive..but I am worth every penny...I have a new Mr. Coffee with the stainless caraffe...it doesn't heat the coffee from below..which is a great concept..It brews the coffee into a caraffe...I also use bottled water since we have a lot of lime here in the Ozarks..

My cockateil does that, and it does hurt your ears.

Sometimes he will go upside down and then flap his wings and get feathers all ofther the place.

Stupid bird.
