A Bit Overweight? Spectacular News

A Bit Overweight? Spectacular News

Woo hoo! There's actually an advantage to being just a few pounds over your ideal weight: You may live longer. The Centers for Disease Control have determined that while obesity is indisputably lethal, people who are modestly overweight actually have a lower risk of death than those of normal weight and those who are underweight, report Internet Broadcasting Systems and The Associated Press.

You read that right. A little extra weight--the key word here, folks, is "little"--is not so bad, especially if you stay fit, eat well, and pay attention to your blood pressure. This new research, which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, analyzed national survey data from more than 30,000 Americans, comparing the mortality rate with body-mass index. Specifically, they compared the death rate in underweight, overweight, and obese people to the death rate of normal weight people.

The stunning results? The CDC determined there are about 26,000 deaths annually that are the result of being overweight, a dramatically lower number than the 365,000 deaths it had claimed as recently as January were due to excess pounds. In these new calculations, obesity was to blame for 112,000 deaths and being underweight led to 34,000 deaths, notes AP. Net net: People who are slightly overweight have a lower risk of death than people who are underweight or of normal weight.

The CDC refused to go so far as to say that being overweight is protective in any sense of the word, and it is still a risk factor for a number of diseases, including type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Because of this, some experts are shaking their heads in disbelief at the conclusion. After all, if your weight places you at a higher risk for disease, it's only logical your life could be shortened. Everyone seems to agree that more research is needed.

Jeeze, lol. Who cares about living longer. If you're fit and trim, you can do more and have more fun. If anything, you're not embarrassed to go to the beach or play sports.

I'd rather lose a couple years on my life but go out having fun for the entire time than being slightly over weight.

I never listen to anything that says if you do this or that you will live longer.

I find it very funny people talking about there will be no money to pay pensioners in the next 10 years or so, And in the next breath they are telling you to give this up give that up and you will live longer..lol It just makes me laugh when I could walk out my door tomorrow and get hit by a car or bus, The car or bus aint going to mind what size I am when it slamms into me...

OK OK I just find these things funny.

I'm 6'3, nearly 260 pounds. I play football, and it helps to have weight on me. I'm even trying to gain weight, I hope I gain height too, or I will start to look a little large :O
