Good question.
Personally I think any background image is the "render"(usually 3D) but I have seen people call everything a render, even text.

any 3d abstract type of picture that was digitally made is a render to me. No life like objects.

yeah, any program can make renders, you need to add more things to vote, that is really limted, heres what they can be:
- A charector / object taken from an inplay screenshot (Game render).
- An organic render shape that can be taken into any image, generated by a 3D wireframe.
- A simulised terrain that can be used in games or for graphics produced by a 3D wireframe.
So really i should vote for its any pcicture, because it's output is a picture.

it's a personal annoyance when someone has a game screenshot, cuts something out sticks it on a bright green b/g and calls it a render. lol it's a cut out not a render.

IMHO a render is the output from a 3d prog, i.e. a model that has been rendered @ high res. NOT a game screenshot.

a render is any object that u see because that object has been rendered to look like that ie drawing a picture means that the artist has rendered that picture
but this is just my two-cents

that's because at one time someone had to sit down and model it, then RENDER it
