Hubble Space Station.....dieing

hey the Hubble space station is dieing and NASA is not sure if they want to fix it....

it needs new batteries and gyroscopes.... if it does not get them it will die in 2007....

From CNN

""Hubble is a joint project between the European Space Agency and NASA. The observatory may be on its last legs. NASA currently has no plans to service the telescope a fifth time. Meanwhile, with its batteries and gyroscopes wearing out, the telescope will likely stop taking pictures in 2007 or 2008"""

eheh maybe they need to bring it back down and junk it. they been talking about a bigger space telescope that use 5-disk's.

seen a model of it on NASA Channel the dish will be more powerful then the Hubble and the images be clear and see out even more then the Hubble ever can.

really think NASA is looking into making big bucks on a new program then a cheaper maints on a older item space telescope program.

They can't bring it back. It's not stable enough for major shifts in its orbit. I say just attach a rocket with it and direct it towards the Sun. Instant space garbage incinerator

If they've got a better one in works, then by all means, scrap it. But until then, it's the best and only space telescope we've got.

DD, I've often thought we should do that with our trash. Fill up a huge rocket with a bunch of trash or somehow put huge containers full of trash into space, then ferry it to the sun. It'll all be incinerated before it gets anywhere near the sun.

Well they better already have one made. I'd keep servicing it until I was ready to put a new one up there.

look like you don't know China is buying waste/trash/junk up like crazy. USA is making a ton of money from them buying trash from us.

Everyone tried to volunteer him for the mission

Why not try to sell the telescope to the private sector? Im sure theres someone that has the money to service it and use it, that microsoft co-founder thats involved with SETI might be the type to be interested...

the hubble set up in a way that it dosent work at the short range between it an the earth, youd need to attach some rockets and shoot it a lot further out into space of it to have any sort of focus...

From what I have read, one of the reasons why they aren't going to service it any more is because of safety issues.

Following taken from http://www.space.com/scienceastronom...ce_040116.html

"NASA officials said the cancellation of the Hubble servicing mission was driven by concerns about astronaut safety -- heightened in the wake of the Columbia disaster -- not budget issues.

NASA chief scientist John Grunsfeld said conducting the Hubble servicing mission without violating the safety mandates issued by the Columbia Accident Investigation Board would have required the development of potentially costly inspection and repair techniques not otherwise needed.

Because a shuttle visiting the Hubble could not reach the International Space Station if something went wrong, Grunsfeld said NASA would have to have a second shuttle on the launch pad and ready to conduct an orbiter-to-orbiter rescue in an emergency
"

But, there is still hope yet. Just read an artical (http://www.space.com/news/050429_hubble_griffin.html).

The new nasa administrator has told enginers to start preparing for a service mission to hubble.
