I have a .bms that I did some experimenting on. I think:
  • Open a map in an unlocked MEd.
  • In the General Information dialog, bottom center, set the Global Effect 'Music' to 13
  • Insert ten area triggers numbered 80 to 89. Insert them apart from each other so they do not overlap, and try to make them easy to find in-game once the mission is loaded and you can run around the map.
  • Select both markers for each area trigger, open the Item Attributes, activate the checkbox for 'Music (var4)' and enter the area trigger number, so area trigger 80 gets 80 in music variable 4, area 81 gets var4 81, etc.

Now if I remember correctly — and I assure you I do not — entering music area 80 will start a track playing. Entering a different music area is supposed to change the track...

But...

This all depends on which number is in the mission's Music Global Effect. That number loads the playlist for that SP map, I think, and I do not know how to get TS playlists to activate. It might be there are only music playlists from the original DFBHD campaign missions, I'm unsure. I believe these music playlists are saved in one of the .sbf files in the main game folder

Then...

I believe that playlist as stored in the .sbf dictates which track loads and plays first, and which track is allowed to load and play next. I'm not sure of any of these parameters' values or syntax, or how music areas need to be inserted into a mission to get any of this functioning correctly, but I'm fairly well convinced it's a lot more complicated than it needed to be.

Also, note that no BMS2MIS program I ever tried can tell the difference between a normal area trigger and a music area trigger, which is why a lot of converted .bms and .mis files are borked. Converting campaign missions means combing through the area trigger markers in the MEd, finding the area triggers with four markers, determining which two of those four are the actual area trigger markers (they usually have lower SSNs) so I can deactivate their music variable checkboxes, and which two are music area trigger markers (usually have higher SSNs) so I can renumber the music areas.

Like, if area trigger 1 in your converted .mis has four markers, SSN 64, SSN 65, SSN 956, and SSN 957, and they all have music variable 4 activated and set to 80, then SSNs 956 and 957 get renumbered to area 80, and SSNs 64 and 65 get their music variable 4 checkboxes deactivated.

And will the music function after all this? I think so, but I play with the music turned all the way down 99% of the time, so I can't really confirm this at the time of this posting.

Expect edits, I guess?
