Smile free HP for 81ci 4cylnder

ok yall know i drive a 88 suzuki samurai, ya know that they arnt very fast and top out at around 60mph.

i got mine to do 75-80 in the time it takes most to do 55.

1st thing ya do is get rid of the crappy exaust, it chokes it down baaaaad, i ended the exaust in front of the back axle and use a magnum glasspac for better flow.

next thing is to unplug the switch that tells it that it is in 5th gear, the switch tells the computer to do some adjustments to the carb and ignition and i set it all up manually so we wont need it.

next take a pellet and plug the vacume line that goes to the EGR valve, this thing is a serious vacume leak and being the carb has vacume secondary ya need all the vacume you can get.
ya plug the line because it is supposed to be required for you to have a EGR but nothing says it has to work( just a cheat)

next git rid of all the unnessisary atatchments on the carb, like lines that ya dont need and plug the holes with whatever works the best, this also raises the vacum.

next git rid of the dang n11yc type spark plugs and replace with some N9YC( yes these are motorcycle plugs) this prvents detonation for the next adjustment.

now crank it up and let it warm up, and after it is warmed up advance the timing on the distributor to where it gets a little funny sounding and back it down till the rattling stops and slowly rev it up and se if there is any sputtering, if there is back the timing down till it stops, ya want it to rev up good and have no preignition( for it to rev smothly),

the easiest way to tell witch direction u are going is, advancing it makes the idle speed go up and retarding the timing makes the idle speed go down.

next, take some duct work for the vents under the dash from another samurai and cut the end down where it plugs inti the vents in the dash and plug 1 end over the inlet of the airbox and just let the other end hag for now, we still have to fabricate.

take a funnel that is used for filling transmissions, the big black plastic ones is what i used, and cut it so that the other end of the ductwork that u cut down and pluged over the air intake fits into the funnel snugly.

attatch the other end of the funnel( the large bell piece) to the grill beside the radiator with the big end facing outward so that it catches the incomeing air and channeles it down the ductwork into the air box.

this give the engine the impression that is has a slightly bigger carb and gives it a mild charging effect by pressurizing the airbox thus increasing the hp even more.

at the moment at 4000rpm i am getting 79-80HP out of a 81 CI 4 cylnder that was origionaly set up for no more than 70hp.

now take it for a drive, climb some steep hills and listen for any signs of detonation and if there are any back the timing down just a fudge and lock it down.

if all is well itll sound like a sports car and acclelerate great.
i can keep up with 6cylnders now even with big tires, gona test it with street tires later and see if i can hit 95 ir if im feeling lucky 100mph.

il probably also get an old datsun carb with mechanical secondaries and put on it later, it has a slightly higher CFM and ya get the secondaries when ya need them.

lol, the thing used to be sluggish, now it seams like at around 50-60mph it just wants to keep accelerating, sucker is fun as hell now.

oh and b4 i ferget, when it rains, unplug the fullel attatchment from the airbox or ya will soak ya paper element.

because i get more power and dont screw up the milage, and this is a motor i rebuilt myself so it is practicly new.

and why is it every time that some1 talks about getting a little more HP some1 always says get the biggest motor ya can find, cubic inches arnt everything.

i can take a 350 buick tinker with it it and put it in a 5000lb+ stationwagon makit it pull a weelstand and carry them, get a bowtie to do that, like at wolf creek mud track, a guy we know and helped on his engines is only running a 455 and kicking the hell out of some guys that have over 30,000$ in thie engines and a 600ci+ v8.

if i go bigger i upset the balance and the gas milage drops.

and it is a suzuki samurai, not a dragster, i did this to get a little extra power for highway driving, NOT city block drag.

and if i ever did put another motor in it it would be a tracker V6, not much heavier than the 4cylnder and got 2 more cylnders.

i could if i was feeling nuts gets 150hp out of this 81ci motor but would probably hurt it in the long run being it got cast crank.

i can already keep up with 6cylnders accelerating with my street tires already so why get bigger motor.

there are all kindof thing that you can do to a motor to get it to run better, this is where every1 screws up, get the biggest motor, ya upset the balance and bigger parts wont wind as tight so top speed can suffer.

why spend oodles of money on new motor and tranny when ya dont have to spend anything but time and get the same effect?

the longer the stroke the better bottom end but like i said cant wind as tight, it takes 4000rpm to go 65 in this vehicle, i get bigger motor rated for lesser rpm ill be limited to lesser speed, yes i can chang gears but then i wont be able to play in woods anymore.

ya can port and polish the motor, gain some power, polish the carb so that itll flow just a little more air, tune length the exaust pic up a little more power.

ya can always tell a shadetree and some1 who obviously never raced b4 when they say git the biggest motor, or get the biggest honking carb ya can find or the biggest cam you can find, what good is all that power if you cant get it to the ground, whilest you are breaking parts or spinning ya tires or bogging becaue ya are flooding it with that 1000CFM im gone.

my uncle used to street race in the 70s and he had a 241 hemi in a 61 dodge pickup long weel base that would outrun things with over 360ci because they didnt do the detail work in their engine, and for top ending cooling is a lot, get a bigger radiator, he beat 1 guy that was driving a vet because the vet kept overheating, pickup wouldnt do much over 150mph but it would do it all day with a 241ci hemi because he had a bigblock radator in front of a smallblock and didnt use autozone second rate parts.

ever heard of a chevy vega doing 120 in a 1\4 with the 4cylnder in it? we done it, the record was 80mph in a 1\4mi but we broke it, the reason we set it up the way it wanted to run for 1,we did all the detail work in the motor for 2, but the vega engine stoped pulling at around 4100-4200rpm and the idiots were reving it to 7000rpm b4 they shifted, what is the point of reving it past where it stops pulling? we shifted at around 4000rpm.

bigger motors dont always mean better.

depending on what u are doing ya might go up a few CI but only if nessasary.

and tell me, what does it mean to index your spark plugs?

and , why cant ya use packard 440 wires with electronic ignition?

what does it mean to index your distributor?

what does knife edging the crank mean and do?

what purpos does a windage tray serve?

what is a main girdle for?

how do ya read spark plugs?

what are the effects of decking the block and skinning the heads?

and what does 2.75:1 mean?

but like i said, all i wanted was a little more power so i didnt have to shift as much, not to city drag.

put me street tires on it, went fer a spin, from a dead stop in a suzuki samurai that stock has a top speed of 60mph down hill, will now do 93mph in 1\4 mile on flat ground and wow that is 5200rpm, using wild countries.

i put a bigger carb on it and turn up the timing(got it low for pump gas) i could probably do 105mph in 1\4 but wouldnt want to, lol, gets squirly at 85mph and would be turning 5500-5700rpm too, b4 i would wind it to 6000 i would have to use forged pistons , rods , and crank.
