Hostages Video Released

An unknown Iraqi group has issued a video of four western hostages calling them "spies".

One of the men in the video is thought to be Norman Kember, from Pinner in north London, who went to Iraq as a peace activist and was seized on Saturday.

The video from the group calling itself Swords of Truth showed four men sitting on the ground, and the passport of one of them, an elderly British man with white hair.

Mr Kember, who was in Iraq with the Christian Peacemaker Teams, has been described as a man of "absolute non-violence".

Earlier, an interview that Mr Kember gave before travelling to Iraq surfaced, in which he told how he wanted to meet ordinary people in the country.


The 74-year-old told Premier Christian Radio: "I hope to meet ordinary Iraqis of various backgrounds, Shi'ites, Sunnis, Christians and and just hear their stories, then come back and talk about it."

Interviewer Rob Frost asked him whether he considered going to Iraq to be brave.

Mr Kember replied: "I don't know, I've done a lot of writing and talking about peacemaking.

"I've demonstrated, you name it I've been on it, but I feel that's what I'd call cheap peacemaking."

When asked if going to Iraq could be more costly than any UK-based demonstration, Mr Kember said: "It could be."

The retired medical physicist was kidnapped along with two Canadians and an American in Baghdad.

Iraqi authorities have pledged "every assistance" in finding Mr Kember and the brother of Ken Bigley, who was murdered by kidnappers in Baghdad last year, has said he will speak to the Kember family if they want him to.

now that we know they are alive, lets hope they stay that way and get released soon

will it like some say a volcano will not blow (this is one of many) so they go and do their testing it, only in Iraq there are 200 fools running around going happy kill all there, you never know what jerk is going to do next.

sad a good hearted person go there and try to help the people out and some jerk like to kill them off! for what? helping the people out there. god man i really wish them jerk get some brain soon.

really start to think these guys doing this are no older then 4yrs running around with a knife thinking its some type of game. poor guys killing off both sides there.
