Best Site Builders? PHPbb or...

To build a web site......!!!

A very confusing array of options indeed.

Don't like a lot of builders so far as they are limited to garish templates, any suggestions from kind folk out there experienced with this dilemma would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about site builders but CMS (content management system) are pretty easy to customize.

Here's a list of different systems:

This might be a better list:

Look under Open Source (should be taken there when you press the link )

mmm...thanks my friend, I think I might need a slight brain upgrade though.
Well worth investigating all suggestions and they do look promising with applied effort.
Joomla sounds familiar and so does a few others
will stay away from Apache though, too many projects and variants.

I totally agree, garish indeed: I do recommend 'Site Spinner' again with garish templates but at least those templates can be removed, replaced and or edited,
so the operation of constructing a site is more like scrap booking....easy.

Lol, you guys are talking over my head !

If it weren't for Microsoft FrontPage I would have never been able to build my website.

I tried PHP and since my provider doesn't provide the SQL database for PHP I was lost on the installation. So I gave up on a forum or any PHP related things.

Hey thanks guys, all helpful and just about covers it, I wanted a site with a forum, all my stuff on it plus links to a lot of of other forums and gaming sites, usual run

of the mill stuff I would say, Just gonna call it "Stompem On The Web"

I've got the Domain Name "stompem.net" registered with Dyn DNS but now having to transfer to Bigpond Hosting as my PC is not good enough to serve apparently

but also I am totally stuck now as can't get any FTP Software to get past my Router.

PS
I used DYN at first because I have a Dynamic IP Address...mmmmm

What was the problem with your computer that it coundn't serve? Even a fairly old P3 or even lower should be able to serve a simple website with a little mysql server. It's mostly the traffic that's the cause of problems with lower specs.

What specs did that computer have? Might be the ISP blocking somthing as many ISP's dont allow servers on their networks.

The Host is also the master PC in the network running W7, the one I use for daily ops.
Gaming and surfing. Tried DNS because my IP is Dynamic.
Should I separate the two, IE dedicated server as Host and the most powerful PC as my utility.?

You can see I don't know wtf I'm talking about. SRY

Seems like WordPress is the new PHP Nuke. It's got a ton of modules and is apparently easy to develop for.

Hey thanks Scott,
I did download PHPNuke the other day and I'm trying to get a handle on all of them enough to make a half educated decision...I kind of thought WordPress was a half done Microsoft type program but I'll have a proper look at it now that you suggest it....CHEERS

If you have an older computer you don't really use, take that and turn it into a server, that way it won't interfere with your games and so on. But if you only have that computer and no old lying around, it's probebly alot cheaper to just rent a shared account at a webhost

And also alot less work

I've only worked with linux servers really so I'm not that good with running servers on windows. One way is to get vmware player (free, but requires 64 bit processor and operating systems now I think) and install linux on it. I've done it that way and it worked great, but it's quite a bit of work and only worth it if you have an interest of lerning how the servers operate with DNS and so on!

But there are of course benefits as well, no one is complaining if your server use a bit more ram then intended or using to much space and so on. Only one who can complain is your ISP
