Sounds like your ram is too low.. so once that is full, it uses up what u have for ur Swap file.. how much RAM you have?

u could try increasing the size of ur swap file. goto control panel -> system -> advanced -> performance options... then under the virtual memory click change.... and put in a new larger size. that is how it is done under windows 2000... xp must b something similar i guess. other thing u can do is open task manager end all the tasks u dont want running 2 free up memory. basically anything listed as homeuser besides explorer.exe and svchost is fine 2 close. dont close system tasks.

Have a look here

Tweeks page

btw I'm betting you dont have much ram right?

I use a gig personally on 98SE with a 1 gig min and max swap file. They say to make the min/max swap exactly 2 times thge amount of the ram in your machine but 98SE doesnt want to go for aparently and the 1 gig seems to work fine anyway cause hey, when the hell is any game gonna use up the gig of ram and start hitting the swap file anyway?

Make sure you do that ConsrevativeSwapileUsage=1 part
to make your games use all ram available befare hitting the swap file.Thisnk of your swap file as a second rate oil reserve.
Yes it will work but not as smoothly and quickly as just having an adequate amount of ram.

For this years games and the games to follow I don't recomend having a machine with any less than 512 MBs of ram at the VERY LEAST

1 Gig my recomendation but if you can't afford that at least shoot for 512.

PS if you think RAM has no effect on your gameplay your wrong.

I remember the first day playing DFLW after my first upgrade from 128 to 512 and imediatly all the maps that used to seem like they were lagging ran Much smoother.
After going to a gig every map ran smoother than butter.

More Ram=smoother,faster framerates simple

This is very interesting because Win 98(SE) can't "see" more than 512MB RAM. Strictly speaking, your machine shouldn't be working at all since all the essential system memory addresses will have been consumed preventing you from opening any other programs.

Read it and weep

Anybody who moved to XP because they were told they couldnt take 98 past 512MB has been lied to. plain and simple

Well, it seems that both Win ME and W98 can handle up to 1GB RAM according to Microsoft, but out of memory msgs may still appear when running certain programs according to the two linked docs at the foot of the page.

the Vcache entries cure the "out of memory" errors

One interesting thing though you cant make your" fixed" swap file larger than a gig or else it automaticly resets itself to 0 and lets winblows manage it again.

When I had only 512 I was able to make it bigger.

Anyway who cares with a gig of ram and ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 I don't think my swap file EVER gets used lol

Anyone who hasnt seen how much faster windows XP is compared to any IBMCompatible OS is a numpty. Plain and simple.

Seriously though.
Your 1 gig of ram would fly in XP. If you havent tried it I wouldnt laud up your good fortune.
98SE just does not compare.
At all.

what are the reasons jersey? 98SE is terrible compared to XP, XP is about 1 trillion times more stable and doesnt have bsod's and xp also fixed a memory issue my computer was having with 98SE not taking the memory i had in (768 pc2100 DDR @ 266mhz )
