Terrain Question For SteveieB

I have just printed out your tut on how to create the terrains. What I want to create Is the question, the thing I want to do is create Trenches and dug outs as I havent really seen them in the df series exept for the sand terrain in dflw the one in the first mission i think it is with the pyramid. Is it worth me trying to do this or do you think it will be a hard thing to do?

I think a terrain with this type of feature would be good for all types of game play and would be a bit of a change.

Just let me know your opinion or anyone elses if this sort of thing would interest you.

a trench terrain would be very easy to make for sure, and is a good feature for maps. the only problem is making sure ppl can actually get out of the trenches hehe. im sure peeps would like to jump stright out of em rather climb out on ladders or someting.

the burn tool in PS is very helpful.

i would love to see what u come up with m8.

im working on a new terrain section for my site which may com in habdy - more details soon.

just though i would say that there are lots of terrain making proggies but for me there is nothing easier than using photoshop at least for editing something made in another proggy but also making from scratch.

personally i believe Bryce is definatley required for making the colourmap

Well I have given it several goes and have had a bit of success with the trenches,What I want is like so its like a straight angle at the front and have the entrence from behind slopeing so you can get in and out with no probs,Its just getting the right shades of grey to make it not too deep or too shallow but im getting there,I have been experimenting will deep canyons etc to see what will work and what will not.So Ive been having a great time lol.
Update you soon m8

Something else you could add to your tutorial I was messing with bryce and thought why not create a groundplane and then raise it so then you can use a different texture for the roads you can see the results from the screenshot of the terrain I raised it a bit much in this one but practice will get me there.

I think it works well

it looks really nice m8

what u can do with PS is make a new layer and select a specific area then use the gradient tool to make a kind of ramp. going from a specific grey colour to a lighter (or darker grey) colour. using the gradient tool u can assure u will get a smooth gradient.

it is just practice, i'm just an amateur that tells ths public what can be done. i experiment and find out what works that's why i know how to do things, if no one asks then no-one will know

Very true,I have only just started using PS im more a 3d person and I like the way you use the 2 together to get the finished result I have just finished a snow terrain Dont go in TFD that good as you can be seen very easy as there is no snow camo But it would be ok with dflw and it has trenches lol but it would be good to just stand in them as when your running along you just fall into them lol because they are hard
to see with the snow glare

i like the look of that one m8
nice settings u used on it also.

one problem i have with the terrains is the 'shimmering' if the colours are too different. Nova really need to fix it so u can use really hi rez colourmaps without it looking like it is moving all the time lol.

make a new thread here >> http://www.dfhq.net/forum/forumdispl...s=&forumid=108

and which ever staff person sees it first will put it in the news

getting peeps to a site is hard work, u need to advertise as much as u can and u need friends to help spread the word. if u make a button (88x31) i can stick it on my personal site >> http://stevieb.dfhq.net i do get some traffic so it might help a little.

its very respectable that u want the map authors to submit their own work, that's what we have done here @ DFHQ. a lot of sites do not do that including other major DF resourse sites that have taken maps from other sites

Back again m8 Is there a z-values that works I get a critical error when i use the one from the df4 utilities

Reason I want it is because I am trying to make a map similar to the D-Day landings I have made the terrain for it.
I would have to do it as a package so the terrain and the mission are downloaded at the same time.

Also is there any item viewers left for tfd as the on-line version has now gone

When I have finished What im trying to do ill post a pic here
See what i managed to do

Its starting to take shape a bit now im just working on some special effects,Like the explosions and debre so im using,Oil drums for the initial explosion and trees under the ground to make it look like sand shooting up.

PS StevieB if you want as soon as im getting close to finishing it ill send you the terrain and ill arrange a time ill put it in password sort of a sneek peek I may have to add a bit of fog to make it look a bit smokey though

OK I have a Test version ready to go.I had to add a fog value of 3 as I had to make it fair for the red team to get up the beach. The map runs fine on mine with everything full up offline so online dunno It may have to be dropped Im not sure.Thing I need Now Is Some testers to try it out.I have called it DFvMOH Retern To Normandy,Pitty the special effects had to go in the end until I Find A way to make it work better.
Its Attack Defend with the red team having to take out 7 Targets I will do the opposite way around so that blue plays from the beach But I want to know what players think first. And if anyone has any idea's to make it better

Hope to get some replys And Ill post A link for download Its 2.23Megs

Thnx OH forgot to say its for Task Force Dagger :S
