Running a `ome server

Hey all,
Who is hosting this website? Isn't it a home server? Well what im trying to do is set up a website that I host myself. Iv been trying to get it to work (im using Abyss web serving software) and I cannot get the IP address to work where other people can see my site. Should I get another kind of software? I have a dedicated PC that I am using for this and I really want to host my own site. I'll start all over again if it's easier.

well, u'll need a Static IP address for one..

No he doesnt need to have a static IP address!

I would suggest using Apache web server.

What Operating system are you using?

What connection do you have? Its no idea to start a web server on a 56k modem, if your gonne be really serious you would be better of with a T3 or atleast a T1 but if its not going to have a lot of traffic its allright with a usual cable connection with atleast 300 kbit up (preferly 1 mbit)

If you use a dynamik IP u need a DNS program on your computer, like www.dns2go.com. It costs a bit if im not misstaken but i dont think its to much of a cost.

If you have a Static IP (same ip every time you conect to the internet) you wont need that program.

Talk to your ISP before you start, they might not alow you to start a webserver with their connection!
Belive me they will notice if you are using one without there premission!

Hey all i easyPHP 1.5 webserver its a simple install file that auto installs apachie webserver, php, mysql and also phpmyadmin that makes it very easy to install and run but you MUST use V1.5 as 1.6 has fatal bug. http://www.easyphp.org/

after that you can use www.no-ip.com they have free domains and a small prog that auto updates your ip to there server so even if you have changing ip you can still run server.

I reccomend easyphp or ISS if you have windows XP. Personally I use EasyPHP instead of ISS because it's alot easier to setup. You don't really need to do anything but how to click install.
