i found a updated firmware for your Cd-writer, still need to know what Firmware is instill into it.

this one is for Windows 2000 serials

For: HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8160B (HITACHI-LG)
Firmware Version: 2.01
link DL: http://us.lgservice.com/gcsc/b2c/hpi/main

its from: LG support service for your CD-writer.

***don't instill it till we know what version firmware is in it ok****

we need to know if the firmware is the same or older, if it older then update it, if it the same it do no good.

click-on drive tap you see the info there listed

if if you like to go update it anyways no warm will come of it anyways.

use a floppy to do it with.

download the file then (open) instill it into a A: floppy

you need to set it has a master drive first, leave the DVD-Rom disconnected temp after upgrading it. you may place the DVD-rom back in as a slave drive.

don't have any Cd or CD-RW in the tray when upgrading the Drive ok. leave it empty.

before removing the DVD-Rom and making the CD-Writer Master turn off power first ok.

general info:

Quote:
IMPORTANT: do not interfere with the drive during the firmware update. If an error occurs during the upgrade process, or the upgrade process is cancelled during this process, damage to the drive can occur. If you experience any problems or have any questions, please contact our LG customer support line toll-free at 1-800-243-0000.

This upgrade is for LG branded drives only. It is not designed for drives manufactured for HP, IBM, Compaq, Dell or any other OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) customers, please contact the OEM for all firmware updates and support for your OEM drive.

Copy the executable file below to an MS-DOS bootable floppy disk and then run it (You can download pre-made MS-DOS boot disks from the Internet at places like bootdisk.com or format a floppy disk with the “Copy System Files” or “Create an MS_DOS startup disk” options). It will then extract the files to the disk.

Before updating the firmware, remove any disks from the drive and connect the drive to the secondary IDE channel as a master drive with no other devices connected to that channel. Warning: If you have two optical drives on the same channel it may try to update both of them and erase or damage the firmware in each one.

Reboot the computer with the floppy disk you just made. At the A: prompt type “LGUP” and press enter. Reboot the computer after the firmware update has finished.

ok i think this might be a bigger problem than we both think i clicked on all the buttons on the nero tool and didn't get nething like the pic you posted and on the last one it said ASPI files are missing could that have somethign to do with the dissapearence of the drives?
and i could not find the firmware thingy on the nero tool and i didn't have nething called drive except drivers wich game me a list of stuff

That looks like a duty for me to do when i have some more time on my hands and not have to go to work in bout 30 mins.

will it could be your filing system gone bad.

do this before we go any more with this.

Start>run> type in:chkdsk /f

play it safe.

if it ask Y or N press Y for yes and restart your system ok. it should do a bootscan of the HHD to if there any need fixing is needed. it will fix most of everything in the WIndows system.

what i found out the DVD is no longer supported it out dated.

think there is a newer firmware 00010 i think. not 100% on this. could not find it ether not by the maker of it at all listing it.

you can buy a New DVD-Writer for USD-65.00-USD-130.00.

you can writer Cd's & even Double layers DVD 8GB,

DVD-Rom only plays DVD and read Cds. i would remove it or unhook it totally.

i seen to many people talk about it all the trouble they are having with it, if you don't mind getting a headackes we can see what we can do about upgrading it, newer Firmware thats the only way. but keep in mind this is really a old dog.

if i own it i would not use it at all and replace it with a newer hardware DVD-Writer it will write Cd's all and DVD all too.

i have a DVD writer it do: all DVD types even double layer, it do all type of Cd's, and minnie Cds too. and pocket Cds
