PHP & MySQL

I want to learn how i can use PHP & MySql together so that i can make a content management system for my website. I recently figured out that if your interested in this you should install PHP and MySql on your home machine, i did this and found it so much easier to work with.

I downloaded PHP Triad here

once you have that installed go to start > programs > PHP Triad > Apache Console > Start Apache. A DOS window should pop up, you should leave this open either it wont work. to start MySQL do the same thing but select MySQL and choose MySQL-D-NT choose the other one if you dont have windows xp. now that should bring up a window that should sit there for a second then go away. if i remember correctly the first time you run MySQL it should ask you to choose your username and password, this can be anything except somthing you will forget.

To test if apache is working open up firefox and type this in http://localhost/phpinfo.php .
this file is actually at c:/apache/htdocs/phpinfo.php but you should only access it using http://localhost/ when you are trying to view a PHP script.

To access MySQL command line client directly go into the apache folder > MySQL > Bin > MySQL.exe

now if thats a bit to 'oldschool' you also have phpmyadmin to play with in your htdocs folder > myphpmyadmin or you can go to http://localhost/phpmyadmin/

i hope that helps sombody out there that wants to learn, just goes to show you dont actually need to buy a domain and webspace from a host that supports this stuff to learn it (yes, this is what i thought) now all that is left to do it find some tutorials!

i suggest these two:
http://www.php-mysql-tutorial.com/
http://dev.mysql.com/tech-resources/articles/ddws/
^i dont take credit for these

There is a similar program I use called easyphp from easyphp.org.. It installs the same things, and all you have to do is click the icon to start apache and mysql.

http://www.easyphp.org..

Some people seem to have problems getting it to work though so yours might be a better option for them

Thanks for the info
