Ie6

Okay, yesterday, I wanted to install IE after getting fed up with FF. Now, I installed IE6 (but this IE6 was a personalized one from our ISP). Okay, so the install's going, blah blah. Then, the computer reboots, and then, goes to the desktop, and then, nothing happens...

I could try removing Firefox and then installing IE, but what if the install doesn't work still? I will have no internet browser then! I can just then install Firefox - but I don't really want it on.

Any suggestions?

Chris

You can download the full IE6 and save it to disk. http://www.updatexp.com/download-ie6.html

If you do get IE6 working, try the MAXTHON 1.6.1 build 22 browser . ( shell for IE6 ) http://www.maxthon.com/

Damnit! I tried what you gave me (that link for SP1 IE6) and no luck. It installed all good, but nothing when the computer restarted.

Do I have to uninstall FF first? I don't wanna really uninstall it at this time due to what I think will happen. :/

Here's an SS of my IE6 folder... Anything missing?:

Of course you can send me the missing files but I do recommend myself doing an actual working installation...

Oh well, it's my brother that caused this sh*t, so that should be his responsibility to fix it... heh. (But I would still like some assistance just incase...)

can you use windows update at all?
you should be able to get the file from there as will.

will before you do this following do these steps

1.) unstill any updates for IE6 or IE7 [Add & remove]
2.) go into add & Remove
3.) "Add/remove windows components" [click-on it left side]
4.) check or uncheck "internet explorer"
A.) uncheck it to clean the system then restart computer
B.) if it already uncheck? check it then it will reinstill IE6 like new. finish it may ask to restart system.

then when you got it all instill again! go to windows update site get all the new updates IE6 or get IE7 instill totally they both be listed there to get.

it may ask for the Windows Cd if so have it on hand to use.

I went into Add/Remove Components and IE6 was checked (it also said beside it 0.0mb lol). I'll uncheck it, apply changes, then reinstall IE6 using that install. Thanks Chief. I'll do this sometime today.

Firefox is completly seperate from IE. There should be no conflict what-so-ever between the two browsers.

What do you mean when you install it, then reboot, and nothing? It's not installed or the browser won't load?

Try uninstalling it through the add/remove programs (Windows components) by unchecking it like you said. Reboot and reinstall. if that fails try upgrading to IE7.

You can also search the internet for IE6 standalone.

When the PC reboots after the IE6 install, there's nothing new. IE6 hasn't even been installed! It's like the installer has installed nothing... Also, the install apparently said I have a newer version of IE6 installed (there was a workaround anyway so yeah).

And the reason why I didn't wanna uninstall FF then install IE was because if I uninstall FF, there will be actually no actual browser for the net and I kept feeling that something wouldn't be right (don't ask me why!).

I was done unchecking IE in Add/Remove Components now... I did go reinstall IE6, no luck whatsoever. Also, I might wanna keep on FF just incase - what makes me think IE6 will install successfully without FF when it won't install properly with FF? :/

What's even more screwed, is that there's 0.0mb next to IE in Add/Remove Components... Is that normal? I unchecked and rechecked IE, no luck at all. Do I need the XP CD to install IE6 via Add/Remove Components?

I also don't want to install IE7 due to me simply hating the looks of it really. I don't think mum would be too keen on it as well...

I guess we go to the plan where someone sends me the missing IE6 files in that folder (shown in the SS posted here). I'm assuming at least one thing is missing because there's no .exe to open IE6 in that folder.

Also, the IE folder in Program Files still exists, and I can't manage to delete it - it might be causing the problem.

Apologies for all this typing, lol.

Chris

There was no updates to uninstall... Besides, how an uninstalled update do something to halt proper installation of IE6?

You know Chief in the past when there was a problem that we couldn't fix? And at the end I managed to fix it without any help? I reckon in the next few days I'll be onto something...

Ain't that something? Yesterday I was doing a bit of playing around, and iexplore.exe was in the IE folder in Program Files, but hidden! Even when hidden files was enabled!

I opened it by using Run.

I then went to the IE6 install, got the iexplore.exe in one of the .cab files, put it in Program Files (not the IE folder), made a shortcut to the desktop, editted the shortcut's properties to come from the IE folder, and voila! Hehe... I'm a cheeky one!

FF just seems to cause me problems sometimes. IE is pure straightfoward, and definitely effective (not saying FF is not effective or straightfoward though).

And if you've got SP2 installed, you should have an effective pop-up blocker integrated into IE (not the best, but hey, it does the job)!
