Linux firewall project

I've been given the task to learn someting new again, this time I have to learn how to build a dedicated linux firewall.. Hardware appliances are far to expensive and small office routers won't be sufficant for our project .. Here's what i've come up with, i'll let you know how it turns out

IPCop Linux Firewall: http://www.ipcop.org

Micro ITX Motherboard (These things are tiny! only 7" x 7"):

Micro ITX Case:

TRENDnet NIC:

Transcend CF Solid State Hard Drive

512MB Kingston DDR2 400 Memory:

Sony Slim Laptop DVD Drive:

I use smoothwall for my linux firewall (smoothwall.org)

But I have to say, that looks interesting.... I think I'll try it out for my self also

My brother did one when his Cisco PIX firewall failed. The Cisco PIX firewall started up again at a later moment though, turned out to be something else causing the problem (he didn't really care at the time as he wanted to lern something new so he never investigated further into the problem)

I thought about messing around with IPCcop, but never got around to it.

I will load it onto WMware and see what it is like! Thanks for the "tip"

Same sorta situation i'm in... We need a new one cause our old one is almost dead... always have to reset it.. but the damn things are soo expensive or a pain to setup.. The firewall I was recommended from WatchGuard costs $2,500 and that's before all the license junk! Not to mention is has virtually no web interface and requires serial cables to configure.. bah pain in the arse.

messed about with some watchguard stuff, fortunately it had a web interface, the odd thing was there was no way to save the config, and there is a hell of a lot of options.

The WatchGuard SOHO's own. I have a SOHO6 sitting around here somewhere. The web interface is awesome and very simple with tons of advanced stuff... too bad they crap out over a little incoming web traffic, come with outrageous licensing costs and do not have free updates..

Let me know if you want to get hit hard! All you'll need to do is add a text file to your root.

it is a custom version of linux.

They take linux, strip stuff out, tweak it, etc and get it down to a the basic functions needed for the firewall. Add a nice web-based GUI to make it easier to configure.

ipcop download is about 40-50 mb.

I don't like the nav on most linux based sites.. They are always so plain yet hard to navigate or find what you need..

Anyone else every noticed this?
