Keeping Your PC Real Safe

Sticky: Keeping Your PC Real Safe

Well you guys are probably familiar with this stuff, but there are ten rules I know if something like a virus or whatever adware has hit your computer.

1. Look in Favorites and if you see stuff like FREE XXX!
Or whatever you do not see on web-pages you have either went into a bad site or have been directed to a bad site!

2. Browser Hijackers, well first of all I thank Chief ADFP for filling me up with this info which will help all of us in
the future. But to find out how to see if there is, if you are going to a site and you do get redirected to a bad site, look at the name of the site like www . bad-site . net or
www . whateverporn . com and once you have found the name,
go to Run on the Start Menu, and type in regedit.
It will bring you to a registry editor. Registry is mainly the settings and controls on your computer and stuff you will find out later in life. Hold down CTRL + F, and it will bring you to where you find files in your registry. Put the link in and you should find it. If not shorten the name, so do not put the www in it or com in it. Just the name like Novafreakers and if you do find one, delete it, and click Find Next and delete all of it. This should work even if you do restart the computer or you do not restart the computer.

3. Adware, if your computer is slow, I recommend
Norton, Avast, PC-Cillin, McAfee, or anything that will keep your system alive for how long you want it to be. Hopefully forever. Get one and do a full scan. If you cannot repair and infected file, nor quarantine it, you should leave it and it might disappear like what happened to me. Or you can manually delete the thing. If you delete the files but you cannot empty the Recycle Bin. Go to Start Menu, Accessories, System Tools, and go to Disk Cleanup. This will clean your computer. When it opens up the window. Check that the box near Recycle Bin is checked which it should already have. And click OK. It will do the job, or it should really.

4. Spyware, if your computer has something strange like a something in your system tray you cannot delete or something else, Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE. On XP this would not show all running applications I think, so I suggest
you get a program that will prove that it would clean the whole PC. If running an OS like 98 on your PC you should see some running applications in the background like
Systray, Rnapp and all, these are usually findable files.
So go to Find in the Start Menu and on the Task Manager if you see any strange things like FREEADS or whatever find it in Find. If you cannot find it check everywhere manually, in the System32 folder. Otherwise if you find something that is the same is that, delete the hell out of it and restart your system. When the computer restarts and gets to the desktop you might see a problem saying Windows cannot find FREEADS. Do not think that this is a system file. Go and download a registry fixer and use it to scan the registry. Clean everything like invalid entries and you name it.
Restart the system. IF it does the same do some more scans and system maintenance. If this does the same when restarted check on other forums and stuff for how to do it.
Good info really.

5. Malware, do the same as above and maybe with Adware as well.

6. Spam, if your ISP has a security suite that comes with it get it. Use Pop3 which is a filter that scans emails before it comes to your email box. Also if you get any emails that say something like Mary or someone you do not know and the email has an attachment or not, just delete it. You can have a look at it but be careful. You might want to look at it just in case it was from your friend and maybe such and such.

7. Net Banking, your bank should not really ask for your Account Name or Password. If they do, just delete the email or hang up or whatever suits you. When I mean whatever suits you I not mean it is your choice, practically it is but be careful that much.

8. Scams, if you are signing up for a prize or something on the net that you are unaware of, looks dangerous, looks suspicious, or feels phony, you should not do whatever it asks you to do, if you want to put fake details in the form first and see. Remember these are just tips and examples, I would hate for myself to be involved in these real life situations.

9. Phone, phoning a support guy or tech on what has happened to your computer is a last priority. Ask smart people first on these tech forums, it will cost you money and if it is for free. Then do it first if it suits you then.
And viruses can hit your RAM also, not just the Hard Drive.

10. Personal Info, this is real important. If you find someone on the net called Bob The Bunker then it is a 60% to 80% chance that the person is a phony. If you are a girl for instance and you like that man, and if that was a girl who was actually talking to you then you are pretty much screwed if you are having a date to be honest and not rude. It is a dangerous world out there.
