Enumerating Session

We just bought 8 copies of DFX2 and put it on our network for multi-player and all we get is "Enumerating Session" from all PC's attempting to connect to the Host. What is up with this?

You need to Port Forward your router - or check your firewall

These are the game.cfg settings:

mpgateserverlocalportmin = "49152"
mpgateserverlocalportmax = "65536"

mpnovaworldportmin = "32768"
mpnovaworldportmax = "32787"

mpnovaworldlanenumsessionportmin = "32768"
mpnovaworldlanenumsessionportmax = "32787"

mplanserverportmin = "32768"
mplanserverportmax = "32787"

mplanclientportmin = "32768"
mplanclientportmax = "65535"

mplanservertojoinportmin = "32768"
mplanservertojoinportmax = "32787"

To Host from a PC I Forward Port Range:
32768 to 32787 UDP

but for your LAN maybe you should try

32768 to 65535 UDP

NOTE:
I have found that if you start these 2 windows services SSDP Discovery Service and UPnP Device Host, Windows should auto config the ports for you.

Some further reading on the subject.

Local port forwarding

Local port forwarding is the most common type of port forwarding. It is used to forward data securely from another client application running on the same computer as the Secure Shell Client. Local Port Forwarding lets a user connect from the local computer to another server. By using local port forwarding, firewalls that block certain web pages are able to be bypassed.[5]

Two important items when using local port forwarding are the destination server, and two port numbers. Connections from the SSH client are forwarded via the SSH server, then to a destination server. As stated above, local port forwarding forwards data from another client application running on the same computer as the Secure Shell Client. The Secure Shell client is configured to redirect data from a specified local port through the secure tunnel to a specified destination host and port. This port is on the same computer as the Secure Shell client. Any other client can be configured that is running on the same computer to connect to the forwarded port (rather than directly to the destination host and port). After this connection is established, the Secure Shell client listens on the specified port and redirects all data sent to that port through the secure tunnel to the Secure Shell server. The server decrypts the data, and then directs it to the destination host and port.[6]

On the command line, “-L” specifies local port forwarding. The destination server, and two port numbers need to be included. Port numbers less than 1024 or greater than 49150 are reserved for the system. Some programs will only work with specific source ports, but for the most part any source port number can be used.

Some uses of local port forwarding:

Using local port forwarding to Receive Mail [7]
Connect from a laptop to a website using an SSH tunnel.

Remote port forwarding

A form of port forwarding that is used for applications connecting to a Secure Shell server in order to use an application that resides on the Secure Shell client-side.[8] In other words, remote port forwarding lets a user connect from a remote Secure Shell server to another server.

To use remote port forwarding, the address of the destination server and two port numbers must be known. The port numbers chosen depend on what application are to be used.

Remote Port Forwarding allows other computers access to applications hosted on remote servers. Two examples:

An employee of a company hosts an FTP server at his own home and wants to give access to the FTP service to employees using computers in the workplace. In order to do this, he can set up remote port forwarding through SSH on the company computers by including his FTP server’s address and using the correct port numbers for FTP (FTP port tcp/21) [9]
Opening remote desktop sessions is a common use of Remote Port Forwarding. Through SSH, this can be accomplished by opening the Virtual Network Computing port (5900) and including the destination computer’s address [6]

Dynamic port forwarding

Dynamic Port Forwarding (DPF) is an on-demand method of traversing a firewall/NAT through the use of firewall pinholes. The goal is to enable clients to connect securely to a trusted server that acts as an intermediary for the purpose of sending/receiving data to one or many destination servers.[10]

DPF can be implemented by setting up a local application (such as SSH) as a SOCKS proxy server, which can be used to process data transmissions through the network or over the Internet. Programs (such as web browsers) must be configured individually to direct traffic through the proxy, which acts as a secure tunnel to another server. Once the proxy is no longer needed, the programs must be reconfigured to their original settings. Because of the manual requirements of DPF, it is not often used.[6]

Once the connection is established, DPF can be used to provide additional security for a user connected to an untrusted network. Since data must pass through the secure tunnel to another server before being forwarded to its original destination, the user is protected from packet sniffing that may occur on the LAN.[11]

DPF is a powerful tool with many uses.

A user connected to the Internet through a coffee shop, hotel, or otherwise minimally secure network may wish to use DPF as a way of protecting data.
DPF can be used to bypass firewalls that restrict access to outside websites, such as in a corporate network.
DPF can be used as a precaution against hacking.

Stompem,

Just now seeing your extensive replies. Thank you very much for putting so much thought into this. I will pass this along to our IT staff.

Our IT staff totally disabled our firewall in our network (Watchguard) to allow all ports and we still get the same thing. This is very frustrating and puzzling because we were hosting DFX1 prior to installing DFX2.

Does Novalogic even have a technical support number where you can toalk with human beings? This issue could be resolved I am confident rather quickly if our IT people could talk with someone real time.

I hope this is the problem, I've been racking my brains and remembered this!

One fatal error is to use the UPDATE button in the digital download version of the game.

Whatever you do don't use it. If you have, you will have to clean-install the the game again. (uninstall completely and then remove any leftover files manually) before proceeding again.

The digital version is up to date already, using the updater breaks it and the game responds (as far as I can recall) with the enumerating session error.

All versions of the game are retail box. Our IT guy and I stayed several hours last night and tried everything you suggested and got the same thing. We even disabled the Watchguard firewall and no change. Are there any human beings to physically talk to at Novalogic?

It's well known that the boxed version have the problem you describe. Unfortunately you don't find out that easy unless you go to the support page and drill down to find it.
So we should have your solution as soon as you download a single copy of the Digital Distro then apply the keys as required for each copy of the software you install.
Novalogic have provided a fix for this problem for copies that are still in circulation.

Go here to legally download the Full Installer

http://www.novalogic.com/kb_article.asp?ID=578

Better still click on the link below. Have a nice day
Quote:
If you wish to do a full manual update of the game, download the latest installer and "repair" your install to the latest version. The latest full installer is located here (note: the download can take awhile)
ftp://ftp.novalogic.com/C3/trz5gg/DFX2Install.exe
After downloading, just run the program "repair" the installation. This will bring you to the latest version
*** Remember *** DO NOT UPDATE the game is ready to go once installed

Stompem,

Downloaded the game at the link provided. Uninstalled game from PC's. Installed the version from the link (1.7.5.7). Did NOT do an update. Attempted to host and got exactly the same problem "Enumerating Session" regardless of which PC tried to host.

Is there any technical support number for Novalogic? Are there actually people that work there that would answer the phone and assist?

Sorry to hear that, it seems to point back to a problem with the router, does the router have a firewall?

If so, set hosting PC to DMZ:

A DMZ (demilitarized Zone) is a conceptual network design where publicly accessible servers are placed on a separate, isolated network segment. The intention of a DMZ is to ensure that publicly accessible servers cannot contact other internal network segments, in the event that a server is compromised.

A Firewall is particularly relevant in DMZ implementation, since it is responsible for ensuring that proper policies are in place to protect local networks from the DMZ, while maintaining accessibility to the DMZ.
Due to the non-trivial nature of DMZ implementation, it is not recommended to attempt a DMZ unless you have a strong familiarity with networking. A DMZ is usually not a requirement, but is generally encouraged by security conscientious network administrators.

For some home routers, it refers to a DMZ Host. Strictly speaking, this is not a true DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). A home router DMZ host is a host on the internal network that has all ports exposed, except those ports otherwise forwarded. Which is often used a simple method to forward all ports to another firewall /NAT device.

Regarding Enurmerating session error:
Baseline for debug:
Set services DHCP and UPNP to run at startup on the Host
Open port range and/or set DMZ
Uninstall, Reboot Delete any leftover files and folders
Do a clean install in a new directory
Don't install in (x86)
Don't allow windows to set compatibility.

We can now work from there...
