Got a question

Which starting and ending PHP tags most people use? Mind you there are 4

1. <? statement; ?>
2. <?php statement; ?>
3. <% statemenet; %>
4. <Script Language="PHP"> statement; </Script>

Think it is the easiest.

Word of wise... unless part of your PHP is in the HTML then keep opening and closing php or else you have to put:
Code:
 echo ("<html><img=/"dsfdkf.gif/"></html>");

I remember I once screwed up DFHQ forum by using scripting without closing
LOL. Poor P had to go back in the code and edit it. TRUNED off my HTML. LMFAO!!! Oh man those were the good old days.

Notepad?

You have to install Apache first.

Easyphp.org is the easiest.

I use
Code:
<?php
php code here
?>
95% of the php that I do I use a template system that keeps the html out of the php files.

that way I can change the look of a page with out having to touch the php code. Just have to edit the template file which would look some thing like (a real basic example)

Code:
<html>
<body>
Hello {username}, today is {date}.
</body>
</html>
The template system then pulls that from the template file and replaces the variables ( {username} and {date} ) with the data.

for comments I do

Code:
// for 1 or 2 lines of comments
// such as this.

/*and this for several lines
1
2
3
4
*/
I use Maguma Studio, which provides a bult in php interpeter so that you can test code right then and there with out uploading to a webserver.

Plus syntext checking.
