4 die in great north run

CHARITY RUNNER DEATHS
Four men died today while taking part in the 25th Great North Run, police report.

The men were among around 50,000 people running the 13-mile course in a bid to raise £8 million for good causes.

Police said there had been no major incident and the deaths were unrelated.

Many of the runners, who raced from Newcastle, across the famous Tyne bridge to Gateshead and on to South Shields, reported feeling extremely hot as temperatures soared in the North East.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "I can confirm four male participants in the race have died, which is more than the usual one or two - but every year more people are taking part.

"We don't have any more details at the moment. The town is still very busy and we're hoping to be able to give further details soon."

Ethiopia's Deratu Tulu won the women's title for the largest half marathon in the world in 67 minutes 33 seconds.

Eritrean Zersenay Tadesse won the men's race in 59 minutes 5 seconds, beating the previous record by one second.

if i was in that race and seen others dropping like flies? i don't think i be back in the race next following year.

they may had bad hearts or they ran to hard.

It's called gatorade and knowing your limit. Sad, but it happens. Most people are dehydrated anyway, then to go run like that, it's just asking for trouble.
