New Horizon For Village
Updated: 13:52, Tuesday February 13, 2007
One of Northern Ireland's most famous Army watchtowers is being dismantled in the village which saw some of the worst violence between the IRA and British soldiers.
The guard post at Crossmaglen in south Armagh is being removed as part of plans to withdraw troops from the local community.
The heavily-fortified tower was erected in 1992 to protect British soldiers during the Troubles.
The post is being lifted from the tower by crane and the rest of the structure will then be demolished.
Plans to pull all soldiers out of the Crossmaglen site by the end of next month remain on track.
Once that happens, the base will serve purely as a police station.
The Army has been conducting Operation Banner in Northern Ireland for 35 years - the longest in British military history.
There are still more than 9,000 soldiers in the province but by the beginning of August that will be reduced to no more than 5,000.
