Upcoming Acclaim Game Causing Controversy

"Video games as a genre are known more for violence than for sex, but Acclaim’s BMX XXX is causing a stir due some of its subject matter and sexually-charged imagery.

The game, which carries a tagline of “Keep it Dirty” and ESRB rating of “Mature”, features such risqué content as pimps, prostitutes, nude strippers and dogs engaged in intercourse.

Although the game will be available both in-store and online at game retailers like Electronics Boutique and GameStop, major chains like Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, and Toys R Us have indicated they would not carry BMX XXX, which could substantially impede the games sales.

In an unorthodox move, Acclaim today struck back with statement in response to the controversy. In it, the company said that the game’s content was “on par with widely accepted mainstream entertainment experiences, including movies like American Pie, and TV shows like The Sopranos and Sex and the City”. To further make the point, Acclaim also offered statistics from research firm NPD Group, which indicated that 60% of game console owners are over 18 and male.

BMX XXX is due to be released on November 19th, and will be available for Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, and Sony Playstation 2.

Acclaim is counting on robust sales of BMX XXX and other upcoming titles to reverse its sliding fortunes. This afternoon, the company reported a net loss of 28.2 million, or 31 cents a share for its fiscal fourth quarter. A year earlier, the loss was 1.4 million, or 2 cents a share."

Well against popular belief, I agree with both here. First the game should not be allowed to the public until it is cleaned up. Secondly the public outlook on what is clean or dirty varies. Mine does not. I refuse to partake in such "entertainment". I find it repulsive and degrading to my intelligence. That may very well be an oxymoronic statement.

I read about this in a magazine awhile back that more and more titles are coming out with the use or porn or close to porn in there games. I think it's ok to a certain extent but even though there is a adult rating on it, kids are still going to get there hands on it. There are few parents (I think) that actually look at the rating and wont let there kids play it.

Truthfully I think this is stupid. It is a game,no different or worse than the movies and tv shows people watch. If it is that bad than make it to where you have to be a certain age to buy it. When you look at GTA 3 and GTA Vice City they are no different from what this BMX game sounds like. The GTA series actually may be worse(not in any way dissing on GTA) I think it should be available everywhere,and for the stores not wanting to sell it than they are stupid. It will probably be pretty popular not just because of the sexual content etc etc. But all the bikers and fans of other bike games would want it.

na think these game consol should have a option it some type of contor for kids or adult setting as in password only way to contor this for parents contor like my DVD player has in it

some TV and DVD players even VCR has a parents contor in them too.soo add it in game consol be a good way put a handle on it.

i for my self like adult game with sex sceen to (not same as sex action this is so dead) them breast or butt or 2 are find to me and bloody mess to it.(i am 42yrs old) over 18 should be ok rated it adult only) kids alway be getting thier hands on DVD adult and other items all the time.

Well this is quite controversial and we are entering into freedom of choice territory here. If you think about it serioulsy for a minute, what are the games creators trying to do with the inclusion of such things as pimps, prostitutes and dogs copulating? Does this enhance the game itself? Are the developers so desperate to get out of the financial mire there in that they resort to this kind of thing? We play on Delta Force the subject matter of which is by it's very nature violent. Should any responsible parent allow their child to play Delta Force? Some people said that the content of this game is no different to many contemporary movies, which is quite true, but how far should game developers be allowed to go in the future? Do we want even more violence and explicit sex in our games? I understand that at the moment there has been controversy in the U.S. regarding an arcade game called Sniper? Due to the terrible events in Maryland and Washington many arcade owners have withdrawn this game from their arcades. The fact is, they are just games, I don't think any off us is influenced by the games we choose to play on, and if you attempt to ban any game because of it's content, where do you stop?
