Already mentioned that thing Nod off to sleep..yawn.
In explanation? Not a good rep here in Aussie and I do not vouch for any of the programs in my links above, simply for the user to decide.

See, it depends on the kind of antivirus you are talking about. If you want a free antivirus, then avast would be the best because it has a real time shield which i find missing in many other free antivirus. If you are want a paid one, then I can't tell you because i am myself confused. There are people who say that one antivirus is good, then there are some, who say that the same thing is bad. It depends on the user experience. Still, i have heard that NOD32 is solid and so is Bitdefender. It's up to you then again.

NOD32 is a winner for me for anti virus.

Security Essntials if you want a free one.

most probs i have to clean up are to do with malware rather than viruses. to clean up someone's PC you will need:

UVK to kill processes http://www.carifred.com/uvk/
rootkit checker like tdskiller http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208283363
malwarebytes to delete the malware http://www.malwarebytes.org/
ccleaner to delete temp files http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

and a good online resource for info on that piece of malware http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/ is great, if you google [ beepingcomputer.com *insert fake program name here* ] there will probably be a guide on how to remove that nasty *&^*

I know this is old but...

I've consistently heard good things about Kaspersky and you can look up benchmarks against other AV's. Kaspersky is pretty much at the top all of the time.

Avast! still works for me and has saved my *** a few times when I have deliberately ignored warnings and proceeded to sites in my pursuit of hackers. Yes I attack them back if I can.

My favorite virus was the rogue anti-virus I got that warned me I had a rogue anti-virus.

It's a good thing I can spot viruses like a hawk... now on to finish downloading my 100kb pack of 10,000 free video games and music.
