Most of them do it to hide their 'true' identity so they don't get hounded by fans on the street. Like slipknot. They always wear their masks, during shows, interviews, back stage, music vides, etc. Everywhere so they won't get hounded for autographs when they are on the street without their masks on.

Slipknot pretty much only wears their masks onstage...their real identities are pretty much widly known now, since they walk around all normal and stuff....thankfully.
