A strain of bird flu has been found in a dead swan in Scotland, health officials have said.

A statement from the Scottish Executive said tests had found "highly pathogenic H5 avian flu" in a sample from a swan found dead in the Cellardyke area of Fife.

However, it is too early to know if the bird has fallen victim to the deadly H5N1 strain.

The statement said: "The exact strain of the virus is not yet known, tests are continuing and a further result is expected tomorrow.

"In accordance with a recent EU decision the Scottish Executive is putting in place a protection zone of a minimum of 3km radius and a surveillance zone of 10km."

Keepers of birds inside the protection zone must take them indoors where they can to prevent them coming into contact with wild birds.

The movement of poultry, eggs and related products from the area is now being restricted and if the disease is confirmed as H5N1 further controls may be put in place.

The Executive's statement added: "There is no reason for public health concern.

"Avian influenza is a disease of birds and whilst it can pass very rarely and with difficulty to humans this requires extremely close contact with infected birds."

Chief Veterinary Officer for Scotland Charles Milne said that although the disease was yet to be confirmed, the find was "an important development".

Exercise Hawthorn, the UK's dummy run for a bird flu outbreak which was underway when the swan was found, has been ended early.

The H5N1 strain of bird flu has killed more than 100 people worldwide.

Experts fear that if it mutates into a form transmissible between people it could kill millions worldwide.

I still think its all blown out of proportion, When it does get transmitted from human to human then Ill worry.

i wont actually worry alot until theres a human case, but with a warm summer predicited lots of travel.. there will be a case within the UK soon probably

I agree with you, but they think now that it had crossed in certain areas but theyve contained it, although the popular media wont say that...

I heard if you catch Bird Flu from a person you will not be harmed, only if you catch it from a bird.
If this is true, then, no need to worry BB.

well it depends if t crosses, how much of the bird flu is retained, if it crosses and its 99% noraml flu 1% bird flu, then there isnt as much to worry about, its if it crosses and becomes more intense then theres problems...

bird to human asker: yes. it go to animals as will too.

eat raw undercooked meat, get it blood in a cut, mouth, any unsafe contact with the bird.

basic it get on their feet and from there it go to the body of the bird, in turn the bird clean them selves up, using their beaks it get into the body. pass on to other by droppings

not limited to type of animal ether been cases of dog's think the count was 5ea and think some cattle's maybe 3-8ea got it

bird flu been around a long time, only now seem some cases are jumping over to other breed of animals kingdom as will humans.

Scotland i love that country side sweet places and all so people were really nice to be around with. 1983 love their style of building's like going back to the 1700-1800 ERA. all so their style of folk dances too.

thats why you should wash your hands before eating time, so your hands are clean free of germs.

i think its blown out to much. its like a dog race every one watching to see who get it next?

world wide its only like 1/100 of a total world has this.


Safety:

drinking even a cold beer or any cold drinks; the sweat on the mug/glass can get on to your lips and the germs on your hands pass on in the cold sweat on the lips.

keep your hands clean when or after your cutting meat or going to start eating food.

when eating any type of meat cook it good, no undercooked or raw blood in the meat.
