Garry's Mod
Is the Garry's Mod worthwhile and good to get? (Free version, not the $10 one off Steam.)
I hear it's a sandbox mod and I've been hearing about it for quite some time so I thought maybe I'll get it. Or maybe not... lol. Kinda Googling it at the same time as well. Any replies totally appreciated. Ta.

Gmod is a modders dream.
heres what you do... hold Q to open up a menu which allows you to manipulate all of the objects with particular constraints, aswell as spawn the objects. once you've spawned whatever you want (lets say a bunch of crap) you can weld it all together into a bigger piece of crap. realising that your giant piece of crap is useless, you attach thrusters to it and some guns. then you spawn people allover the map then you blindly blast your machine into another dimension and blow some more stuff up. ill put it to you this way, you can do whatever you feel like, and build whatever you want. the $10 one is like 5x better than the free version. The interface is more streamlined and simpler, and you can download mods from the server your joining if you dont already have the additional mod that they're using. I think the game itself only works if you have half-life 2, since thats 95% of the objects your using. and no you dont download the objects with gmod, hl2 and gmod are installed in similar folders and if hl2 isnt present, gmod has nothing to go off of. and if you had any other source game, Counter-strike source, half life 1 source, day of defeat source, Team Fortress 2, and some other games i cant remember, gmod can take advantage of those and use its objects. |

Gmod won't work on 1.6. It's a GoldSrc game, not a Source game. It'll work on CS: Source, I believe.
Thanks Steve and Mstenger. But yeah, curious about what the free Gmod has compared to the one you have to buy. I don't mind much, as long as I can weld crap together, lol, right? I love the physics engine in HL2 so I'm probably gonna have a good time enjoying it. It's a 30mb download so I might consider it. Will read more on it though, and maybe watch some vids of it in action. Any other replies appreciated.

Theres this additional addon for gmod called the wiremod, which is only available for gmod 10. It's a creative mind's dream. When playing multiplayer with a bunch of random people i was tinkering with a toy when out of nowhere this car runs me over. I respawn and it comes after me again, i sprint jump out of the way and miss it. It turns around and comes after me again, once again i dodge it. I realised that nobody was driving it, somebody actually built a killer car and using the wiremod, programmed it to chase after people and run them over. I thought after the first 10 times of dodging it whoever was driving it would surely give up, but nope, its programmed to run over whoever is nearest to it. |

Or you actually learn how to make a decent mod using the advanced options in SDK

plenty of times, eventually i spawned on the other side of the map and snuck into the building where the asshats were building their cars. I was walking around the room lookin at all this crap they made then they spotted me and shot me, i was supprised they didnt see me sooner, i was out in the open area of the building where anyone can look and see me.

once you get the hang of it and find a good server online, it's the most fun that i've ever had out of a video game ..

especially when you get into a build survival server, the entire purpose is to kill or be killed. this one dude built a freakin sky base that detected nearby entities, once a rockets, bullets, or people got within range it fired actual freakin homing missiles, that do follow people around. when things get too close it activates its inpenetrable forcefield.
the wiremod is in no way as simple as *spawn homing missile* *target player* or *spawn inpenetrable forcefield, set activation distance* it is way more complex than that, to make stuff you use an entire array of ingame electronic equipment, the knowledge on how to build your very own silicon based equipment helps by a whole lot. |
