Playing DF:BHD through VPN

I am having difficulties trying to join a DF:BHD LAN game after logging in through a VPN connection.

After logging in through VPN, I can launch the game but the LAN server will not appear.

I have also tried Remote Desktop to a pc on the network but can't launch the game because it can't find the right graphics to display the game.

Is their a way to be able to play a LAN game through a VPN connection?
