The term "release to manufacturing" or "release to marketing" (both abbreviated RTM)—also known as "going gold"—is used to indicate that the software has met a defined quality level and is ready for mass distribution either by electronic means or by physical media.

To put it simply:

Release to manufacturing (RTM) = Gold (going gold)

Or if we wanted to do it mathematically:

r = g

Therefore, Windows 7 RTM = gold.

Yes, bigsmellyfart said it went gold in August - if we round July 22 to the nearest 10, that'd bring us pretty damn close (if not on) August.

"Going gold for retail" is confusing - just say release date.

To simply if it for you, it means that "gold" ("RTM", "going gold", "going for gold", "going to get gold from the bank", "goldilocks"), is to show that software, has met a GOOD quality level, and is READY to be released. There is a difference between "OMG it's released to everyone!!!" and "OMG it's good enough for release!!!"

If you still don't understand, I'll make it simpler.

Is getting ready to do something, and actually doing it the same thing? No, it isn't.
