free firewall and anti-virus software
found zonealarm still have their free firewall solo package for download
but keep in-mind once you click-on download look for the grey out box to only download the firewall and no then more. link: http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en...e-firewall.htm don't care for zonealarm anti-virus at all, seem limiter or unknown what it can safe guard you from! ------------ avast! free Anti-virus software is still good for home users, limited other options are disable need to pay for full version full range of coverage still it still save you many ways unlike others can't, still love the boot-up scan check for virus before you get to log-in screen more details link: http://www.avast.com/en-us/index btw nether on has any spyware or adware to them, zonealarm has a small popup box come on desktop not all the time, small box 1-2 times a day! *been some time we talk about freebies software here!

note: Avast! about their anti-virus boot-up scan! count on how large your HHD be if it like 1T HHD may take super long time to scan it vs say 180gb HHD would be done super fast

yeah, all that is true. I use the avast free edition, and it's been almost 10 years since I have been using it. It works great for me, but their is one gripe that does hurt me, that it's a real system hog.

Things like realtime scanning parameters can be optimized if you spend alittle time in the individual scan and monitoring settings. Better still make your own custom scan or even turn some off. No real need for a home user to have agressive scanning during general use. Passive scanning can be carried out as and when programs or documents are actually opened. Set a system memory scan to init when your screensaver comes on. I have no trouble at all with Avast and the Win7 system sits at 0% - 1% CPU and 28C degrees at idle after boot. After making a few scanner exception rules you can get it to leave you alone for ages until such time as you download or open exe's that are new to the scanner memory. |
