Red Hat 9 is free aswell
I use Redhat 9 and like it. I do use the terminals alot but i like to just be able to press a icon to browse the net at times aswell I use it mainly as a test rig for Web and other servers. Many of the linux os are still GNU, but you can now after a decition to by the Swedish/Finnish creator (is part of the MySQL team) decided to relase it for profit making (several years ago). |

Fedora took over the free redhat market.
Redhat decided to focus more on it's enterprise/commercial software. Redhat 9 was the last free version of redhat. Gen, try the Knoppix live cd. IcI |

One of my pet hates about linux is the fact that most drivers/programs tend to have dependencies missing.
Some of the new drivers/programs versions are starting to contain everything you need to get them working. I just wish everything was as easy to install as windows software. For most home computer users windows is still the easiest to use, while linux is just a poor 3rd grade mess. |

the emerge program (used to compile and install software) makes sure all the dependencies are there. that was the main reason why I ended up going to gentoo after trying freebsd, redhat, fedora, mandrake, slackware plus a couple others. IcI |

Guys i found the perfect linux/windows setup for me
i seen a ad in pc mag. about ms virtual PC and so i downloaded and tried it and ITS great.. i can run as many os's at the same time as i want... and it seems to be allot faster with windows.. i got win 98,win 2000,win xp pro and ubuntu linux and soon to add gentoo desktop version.. i love it.. i can use linux for certain things like web surfing etc... and use windows without rebooting for games and junk... This is one of the few things ms has done right.. |
