Sad The computer is dead

Alas, after some 3 years of service, my computer has karked it on me. This is quiet bad, not because of my games, but because now i cant get into my IMPORTANT documents for uni, which are due within a few weeks. I shalt explain what happened...

I was just putting in some NO CD patches for some games and after testing them to see if they worked, i found that the sound was crackling. I solved this by some restarts and shaking the computer itself (bad idea, i know, dont rub it in). But then when i went to play a game, it wouldnt start.

Thinking that it had something to do with the CD drive being disconnected, i went to plug it back in....while teh computer was still on. Now you can rub it in. I'M AN IDIOT!! So as i was blindly fumbling to plug the power cable into the CD drive, there was a startling "POP!" and an almighty flash coming from the processor box. "****!" I said in astonishment. Then i cursed and cursed and threw some stuff around and went to turn the computer back on (since it turned off after the pop). Nothing happened. I knew this was bad.

Tomorrow, i'm taking it in to the techys to have a look, but im curious. Will the computer be resurected? Can all my files and folders and stuff be salvaged? I'm not asking for fixing help, all iwant to know is if these things can be done.

Thanks.

hopefully just the powersupply has blown, very common if you put the molex in the cd drive when it is still on :/

i did it one time on a customer's server :/ luckily it came back on. i was lucky and learned my lesson with no failures.

sometimes it takes the mobo down aswell, which wouldn't be too good. but your hard drive will be ok for sure

the flash came out the psu?

holy crap that was quick...

Erm...psu? I'm guessing that's the processor power box thing. Then yeah, thats where the pop and the flash came from, much to my distress. Its funny how this stuff happens after i had such a good day previously.

(got a job, bought a game that i only was able to play for a day until this happened)

Thanks for putting my mind at ease slightly

Uni? Thought you were in Year 12?? what you studying?

PSU is the power supply unit, but yeah your Hard drive should be ok, or at least recoverable...

Anyway, probably Karma, what you get for saying you want to kill someone

I think it is safe to say that your CPU & motherboard are well and truly screwed.

Shorts and power surges can damage all the other components, memory, display board etc.

If the techy is lazy and after your money, he will just tell you to buy a new PC and the data was lost.

If the hard drive was not writing to disk when the fault occurred, you have a good chance of just plugging it into another PC to recover your data.

If it was writing to disk at the time, then your data may be corrupted.
Even if it is corrupted, you might be able to get the data back using data recovery software.

What ever happens, make sure you keep your hard drive.
If you have any personal information on it, before disposing of it, smash it with a hammer.

Most likely you'll get your data back if they know what they are doing.. I did something like that with a case fan, the small pins were touching the case when I turned the power on. Sparks shot out and it started to smoke. Nothing was damaged but the fan and the cable.

well, i dropped it into the techy today (he worked on my mum's old computer and got it working ok). Should get a call this arvo from him. He says that it just might be the busted psu thing and should be able to repalce it or something or rather. I just hope i dont have to go and buy a new computer. I've got like $400 worth of hardware that i bought seperately. I would like a faster processor though

What the hell...do you mean the HDD? Why would i want to do that!? I've got so much important stuff on it that doing such an absurd thing is unthinkeable! (important files = secret porn stash...shhh dont tell anyone )

I guess i should have told the dude that i'd like everything including the HDD back intact...

think he was only to give a good tip if the hard drive is totally gone to as in burn up then its best to wipe out all the data or trash the HDD totally with a hammer.

i hope it all work out for you, think the HDD and whole system be fine.
