BREAKING NEWS

Updated: 2 hours, 7 minutes ago
BLACKSBURG, Va. - At least 22 people were killed Monday in a shooting rampage on the Virginia Tech campus, police said. They said the gunman was among the dead.

In addition to those killed, officials said at least 28 people were wounded.

Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum said the gunman was dead, but that he didn't know how he died.

"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said university President Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified."

Up until Monday, the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history took place in 1966 at the University of Texas, where Charles Whitman climbed to the 28th-floor observation deck of a clock tower and opened fire. He killed 16 people before he was gunned down by police. In the Columbine High bloodbath near Littleton, Colo., in 1999, two teenagers killed 12 fellow students and a teacher before taking their own lives.

Virginia Tech reported shootings at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus, beginning at about 7:15 a.m. local time at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed residence hall that houses 895 people, and continuing about two hours later at Norris Hall, an engineering building.

At least one student was killed in the dorm and others were killed in the classroom, Flinchum said.

After the shootings, all entrances to the campus were closed.

"There's just a lot of commotion. It's hard to tell exactly what's going on," said Jason Anthony Smith, 19, who lives in the dorm.

Aimee Kanode, a freshman from Martinsville, said the shooting happened on the fourth floor of the dorm, one floor above her room. Kanode's resident assistant knocked on her door about 8 a.m. to notify students to stay put.

"They had us under lockdown," Kanode said. "They temporarily lifted the lockdown; the gunman shot again."

"We're all locked in our dorms surfing the Internet trying to figure out what's going on," Kanode said.

Madison Van Duyne, a student who was interviewed by telephone on CNN, said, "Most of the students are sitting on the floors away from the windows just trying to be as safe as possible."

It was second time in less than a year that the campus was closed because of a shooting.

In August 2006, the opening day of classes was canceled and the campus closed when an escaped jail inmate allegedly killed a hospital guard off campus and fled to the Tech area. A sheriff's deputy involved in the manhunt was killed on a trail just off campus.

The accused gunman, William Morva, faces capital murder charges.

This breaking story will be updated.

there was no terrorist in this, think they say it was a student who gone gun-hole on every one. inside a classroom.

i like to know the reason the fool goes nutso is all.

we will never know what flip him out to do this. peer pusher maybe?

don't seem like he done this over a girl? reason 32 seem a bet much freak out over losing a girl to another guy or girl.

feel for all them who die and the fool family as will who done this. there be no asker for their lost

i seriously think that you and your class need their senese of humor adjusted

anyone who laughs at the death and suffering of fellow human beings makes me sick

for all u know it could have been YOU that got killed/injured this morning.. just b grateful tht it wasnt, after all think of how it would effect ur family... infact heres a thought for u, just think about this and then try to laugh.. think of the 32 families who have just lost a loved one.. not to mention the other families who are hoping that their son, daughter or mum, dad (after all we dont know if staff were injured/killed) makes it thru.

and well, i think any incident involved a gun is serious, mayb its the way i was brought up or mayb its the fact i have seen them ruining and taking lives over here... or mayb its the fact that every day when i go for my lunch that i could be shot at any moment while walking thru an estate that hates every1 at our school..

mayb 1ce u c the reactions or once u actually grow up u will c how stupid and selfish ur comment is...

Lucky, there is a point when you should keep your laughter to yourself. I mean yeah free country laugh all you want. But it is disrespectful to other people. It's called maturity. When the WTC happend. I didn't know anything about the WTC tbh and I still cried. When Columbine happend of coarse I didn't know anyone there or nore did I live here, but later on a few years later when I learned and heard about it, I almost cried. Stuff like this is sad, it's fine to laugh at it but common keep it to yourself.

Just watched this on the news. Damn terrible yet these sort of things can be prevented. Apparently the so called...Gun Lobby holds power over all weapons in America. Thats what the news tells me, but i dont take everything the news says to heart.

This was on the news here just a while ago.

They're actually saying it's pretty easy to get a gun in Virginia...

info says that he was an asian student, so he couldn't just go to a gun store and show his lisence and get guns like that, maybe he borrowed / stole a couple 9mm from someone else, too early to make too many accusations, no comment to he lucky situation either, apart frm you should think before talking.
