WWII Gun Question

im reading a book called 'The Master Sniper' 9VERY GOOD!!), the vampir is supposed to be theo nly gun of its kind in those days, was the vampir a real gun? Because repp the guy using it shot down about 500 men in one battle, ALONE, with tanks up his ass!, he was supposed ot be the best. if anyone can answer this please do.

ive been looking around, there is a lot of references to 'vampir' being an infa-red / night vision scope. but that aint it.
basically vampir mean vampire which you might have known, so it may just be a nickname for the gun.
the quest continues....

the Sturmgewehr 44 exactly equivalent to the one later introduced on the M3 US
Carbine, was planned to equip all german rifle starting with STG 44 and K43 in
April/ May 45 to give german troops a higher night combat capacity."
