Virgin Media confirms network wide 100Mbps broadband by 2011

things moving well in the UK lucky i'm in a cable area

Virgin Media has confirmed to Pocket-lint that it hopes to have its entire network able to offer 100Mbps broadband speeds at some point within 2011 - with an initial service available in key areas by the end of the year.

"We are hoping to have a number of key areas online by the end of 2010 with the whole network able to access the 100MB broadband speeds at some point in 2011", a spokesperson for Virgin Media told Pocket-lint.

The confirmation comes as the company announced on Tuesday that it was rolling out its new ultra-fast broadband service to those wanting to surf the Internet at "break-neck speeds".

"Following our 200MB fibre line testing in Kent we feel confident that we can deliver 100Mb across the network", our man in the company told us.

But Virgin Media isn't just sitting on its laurels, hinting to us that the network could go to 400MB download speeds in the future.

The 100Mb service will allow users to download a music album in as little as 5 seconds, an hour long TV show in 31 seconds and an HD movie in 7 minutes 25 seconds.

Currently Virgin Media has 4.1 million broadband customers, with most on cable broadband, and currently offers 10Mb, 20Mb and 50Mb services.

The news comes as Leeds telecoms company Aql announced that the city will be the first in the country to get super-fast broadband speeds of up to 100Mbps. Businesses in the Calls area, many of which are media and marketing agencies, will be the first to benefit from the high speed fibre project.

Crap im stuck with comcast or the even worse local DSL.

thats about my average. they screwed up in january and shut off my cable for supposedly not paying the bill. when in reality it was a neighbors that was supposed to be disconnected, when i was talking to the tech he said they are going to be upgrading the local network so we get higher speeds. probably bump me up to 20 down and the same for up. jerks.

Yes Though they try and rip off thier existing customers, I had to phone and threaten to leave virgin media to get the 50 meg for the same price as new customers. I was paying double for what the new customers were paying for for 50 meg for my 20 meg.

But I have 50 meg now for I think its 28 a month for that I was paying 39.99 for the 20 meg.

But happy with this for now.

Comcast suxssssssssssssss
I have them and get this:
But the internet connection drops constantly. They charged me for a full month that I didn't even have internet and then they send their bill "electronically" which I told them not to, so I get a late fee in addition to sucky service. Idiots.

Broadband's here okay. If anything the data cap pisses me off - 6 gigs for $40, unbelievable! In January the ISP had a little screw-up with the whole of NZ and bumped us to 12 gig... but anything left from that doesn't carry over to the next month.

An extra $20 for an unlimited plan, but with controlled traffic instead of a throttle to 56k speed.

damn chrispy :/ hope they improve their stuff sometime.

Virgin media is not bad, but many will complain about their traffic shaping policy based on fair usage. i cant rememebr exactly but i think you can download 3GB during the day, and again i'm not sure (becasue i dont go over the limit) but it runs from around 7am to 9pm. after that you can do what you want. infact on the 10MB plan you could go to 65GB/day which is impossible with the traffic shaping anyway. now the problem is that even watching HD youtube content you can get capped, let alone the HD content from any number of TV sites for the standard tv companies.

they push all these on demand products, streaming this and streaming that, films, music, tv - all legal, but then your ISP throttles your connection so you can't watch, hmpf :/ you end up bloody pirating tv series that you could legally watch, heh.

Close Haven't seen a cap on broadband here since they started rolling out DSL connections, well besides on mobile internet (7.2 Mb/s 3G)
I've never experienced a bandwidth limit. What do you get after those 3 GB, do they cut you off compleetly or limit the speed?

Would of been nice to have the 100/100 package but it's at around $80 US per month and thats just too much (for a server)

I think they just limit the speed. I can't download much during the day.. I get around 30kB/s download speed and then just over 1mB late in the evening, so I usually do it all in the night.

Im on Virgin Media btw. I think we're on the 10mb plan.
