Change your XP boot screen
This works for both XP and 2000.
Tired of the generic Windows boot screen you see every single time you start your computer? Wow and amaze your friends by changing it to your own custom boot screen! First off, you need to get a program called Boot Skin (http://www.stardock.com/products/bootskin/) as well as a program called Skin Studio (http://www.stardock.com/products/ski.../downloads.asp). 1. The catch to the whole thing is you can only use 4 bit images, or only 16 colors. Since most pictures are more colors than that, you’ll have to try hard to make 4 bit screens. Also, the picture has to be 640x480. So break out your favorite picture editor and go to work (don’t worry about the format). 2. Once you have your picture, open up Skin Studio. Press close on the little window that pops up. Under the “Tools” toolbar, go to Boot Skin and click “Prepare Image.” 3. Click browse and find your picture you made. If it’s not already in 4 bit mode, Skin Studio will do this for you. If you did a picture with a lot of colors, then it will more than likely not look very good. At any rate, keep “resample” and “dither” checked. You can go through the sliders on both to try to get the best look. Once you’re done, click “Save” and save it. It will automatically put it into bitmap, so you don’t have to worry about that. 4. Go to your Boot Skin folder. It’ll be under Stardock and Win Customize. 5. Go into the “skins” folder within Boot Skin. 6. Create a new folder and name it whatever you want. 7. Go into some other skin folder and copy the file named “bootskin.” 8. Paste into your new folder. Also move your picture you made into this new folder. 9. When editing this information, only edit the names. Do not remove or add any quotes! It’s all pretty self-explanatory, but for the line “Screen,” change the name to whatever you named your screen picture. So if it’s called myboot, type myboot.bmp. Save the file. 10. Open the Boot Skin program, then choose your screen from the selector. Click apply and you’re done! My next tutorial will explain how to put the loading bar on your boot screen! © Dr. Bullet |
