Technically the SR-71 can and did go out of the atmosphere. It's pilots actually had to wear spacesuits. One thing to consider, the space shuttle goes from a huge dead weight straight up. An airplane can circle and use far less fuel and get more speed. Technically, the space shuttle isn't fast enough to break gravity. It's only by sheer force that it gets into space. It's probably the most inefficient use of power ever. And, as Burt Rutan and Spaceship One proved, you don't have to do it that way or get huge speeds to go to space.

Well geeze...it can't do it all. The F16 can't do jack against an army of tanks. I'm sure if there's any threat of AA attack, the A-10's escorts will deal with it quickly.

An A-10 can't do jack against an M-16

They all have their purposes. The A-10 actually can do air to air combat with its guns. Mostly helicopters though
Something about those Mavericks...they've only got a couple. A-10 has a ton of projectiles for taking out entire rows of targets...at the same time! |

F-16 can carry a 500lb bomb

Gah, you people...A-10 is the best and only plane for what it does. They plan on keeping it until something better is built. So there
Look at the B-52...First flown in 1954, it is still the best. It's the longest running plane in history. They're partly based out of an AF base near me. You wouldn't believe the awesomeness of driving by their hangers and seeing them or watching them fly overhead. Not bad for a 51 year old plane! |
