PAEDO SUPERVISION THREAT

Police and probation officers must receive a massive cash injection to monitor medium-risk sex offenders living in the community.

The demands from childrens' charity the NSPCC could lead to an extra 20,000 offenders being monitored, and cost at least £25m a year.


It comes the day before new government figures will reveal the number of sex offenders currently being supervised in the community.

Offenders in England and Wales are monitored by police and probation officers under 42 local Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (Mappas).

Last year's Mappa reports showed the number of highest-risk offenders - who are subjected to the most stringent conditions and may even face covert surveillance by detectives - referred to the multi-agency panels fell 24% to 2,152 in the year.

The NSPCC wants to see Mappas given more resources so these stringent conditions can be extended to all medium-risk sex offenders.

The charity's Phillip Noyes said: "Freeing paedophiles and other offenders into the community without proper supervision and monitoring leaves children vulnerable to attack.

"Close supervision means the police and probation services can move in if a freed prisoner approaches children."

Disgraced pop mogul Jonathan King was released from prison earlier this year after serving less than half his seven-year sentence for abusing teenage boys.
