No. Currently i am a WinBlows NetAdmin. However, I have been using Linux to some degree or another since 1999 and almost have my Linux Certified Admin Certification. We are talking about switching some of the servers over from windows to linux at work. As well as, moving to some other open source platforms (openoffice etc) for use within the company in an effort to save some dough on the Windows Liscenses, but that won't happen for prolly another six months or so.

we discussed operatin systems cost in systems engineering seems a lot of big companys are going open source ... its a big market can't wait to graduate

Opensource in the server market is definitely the way to go at this point (Though i still have yet to find a suitable replacement for MS Exchange Server that fits my needs). As for the desktop for the average end-user...ehhhh it's still got some improving to do but it is getting there rapidly.

yeah i used red hat...didnt like it much...but SUSE is cool ... linux is a cool language i cant wait to start building kernels

Not quite, open source also means hackers have access to the code to find exploits eaiser. Linux is more secure then windows <b>If</b> the user running linux keeps the patches flowing.

Most people running linux know something about computers, security, and will keep the system running smooth and up-to-date. The average person on the computer (Windows) is blunt, dumb. Linux people watch for this, dumb people don't. People that don't = easily hackable.

Linux is hackable, just the average user is on Windows, and what hacker wants to spend days, or weeks looking for an exploit that won't affect 90% of everyone on the computer. If everyone was on linux it would be the other way around.

Security is only as good as the admin wants it to be. If you are security minded and pay attention to the latest exploits/whatnot your system will be relatively rock-solid. If you don't pay attention to anything and just "use defaults" you are a dumbass and should be hanged. Problem is that most NetAdmins don't take the security aspect of their job seriously or even worse don't know how.

To say Linux is more secure than Windows??? I don't think that's necessarily true (or false for that matter) as i believe it's the admin who decides how secure the box is going to be. Windows can be set up to be just as hard to hack as a Linux box. It just takes the effort to do so. In some ways, I guess that's what makes Linux "more secure" as it doesn't take so much effort.

I don't use Red Hat (or Fedora for that matter) at all. Can't stand it. Currently installed at home is...

Mandrake 10.1 on my main desktop. It's the one that I use on a daily basis. Started out on Mandrake and have used it ever since and prolly will for a long time.

Libranet 2.8.1 on my second computer. This is a Debian based distro. Simple to install. Easily configurable, and I love apt-get.
