Website really slowing down..

I've added some PHP functionality to a site i'm working on, and it's seemed to really slow down =/

Maybe Scott or someone can answer this, but by closing the connection with mysql_close() on each page, could that slow it down that every page has to then connect to the DB again? Is there a better way of doing it than having connection strings on every page?
