wives' command over their husbands

There was a king who liked to visit his country in the guise of a peasant to get a better feel for his people. One day, this king heard a woman verbally abusing her husband for not bringing in the wood earlier. The king was puzzled, as he had complete control in his marriage, and he could not understand why such a big man would take these insults so meekly.

The king decided to call all the married men of the kingdom to his palace. He announced:
"All men who follow their wife's commands, go to the right. Those of you who do not follow your wife's commands, go to the left."

At once there was a mass scrambling for the right. Only one man went to the left. The king asked him, "What? Are you the only man in the kingdom who does not submit to his wife's orders?"

The man only looked around self-consciously without answering. He looked rather uneducated, so the king thought that maybe the man did not understand the king's orders. The king asked, "Why did you go the left?"

And the man replied, "Because my wife told me to avoid crowds!"
