Reboot problem

Well I've just installed XP on the new comp, and I found that when the computer has to reboot half-way through the XP install, it doesn't actually reboot? What it did was completely shut down, and I had to turn it back on manually.

Even when the computer is supposed to reboot itself after installing drivers - I still have to manually turn on the computer because it shuts itself down instead of restarting.

I have a ASUS P5N-SLI (manual? dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socket775/P5NSLI/e2234_p5nsli.pdf) and I've honestly looked all over the manual. I've checked in the BIOS for any settings too. I've also looked to see if there were any jumpers I need enabling. Nope, no luck.

However, I do recall the computer being able to auto-reboot at one stage though. One of the XP discs that was sent to me was corrupted, so when the install failed, it rebooted the computer and tried to start all over again. That time, I believe it actually rebooted.

But yesterday I just recieved a fresh XP disc and the install worked on that.

Maybe it's an OS issue?

Oh, and the reset button works perfectly. The comp ain't plugged back in yet so I don't know what happens if I try to restart via "Shut Down".

did you have anything plug in any of the USB ports? when you was installing windows?

only things should be plug-in are monitor, key broad, mouse

no printer or anything other then the normal items

all so i remember windows xp takes a long time to install items in as will, it may seem to hang but don't power off! walk away and come back in a hour or two should be ok

i install windows xp many times
but all my disc were made by Microsoft not by 3rd party. i like having the real deal

could be a bad burnt disc take the disc hold it up to the light and look on the data side of it, see if there any pin holes showing through it!

Guys, it isn't about the XP installation. What I was talking about was that the computer refuses to reboot if I go to Shutdown > Restart (it shuts down instead of restarting itself).

Like I said, for example, I would install drivers, then the installation would automatically restart the computer, right? Well what it does is shut the computer down instead of restarting.

It's not much a problem no, but I'd at least like to know what the problem is.

sorry i thought u were stuck on the xp install, it wasn't clear that you had xp installed and working.

if it's never worked properly even during xp install then i'd think it was the bios, but i guess you haven't been poking around inthe bios and changed something u shouldn't.

i think the asus boards have a few power settings but looking through them i cant really see somehting that would stop it rebooting.

does windows leave any message when it's shutting down? does it take a long time?

have a spare powersuppy you can try?

make sure you have the newest bios http://support.asus.com/download/dow...s&model=P5NSLI when you see the POST screen when you first switch on, press Pause/Break, and check the BIOS version at the bottom of the screen.

one of the bios fixes mentions an issue regarding a system hang after a reboot so definately worth a check.

No spare power supply.

When the computer starts to reboot itself, what it does is shut down instead of reboot. It doesn't hang or anything like that.

I haven't updated any drivers yet mate (still sorting stuff out for this computer and getting files backed up, etc.).

Still getting things sorted, don't worry.

And yeah I've looked myself in the BIOS, and no luck unfortunately.

BTW, is it normal to update BIOS regularly? Or are you only really supposed to do that in situations where you run into problems that could be BIOS related (in this case, me probably).

Computer still doesn't auto-reboot. The only times today I've seen it actually reboot itself was on the first reboot on the XP install, and restarting it after being in safe mode.

So yeah, I'd probably have to give updating BIOS a go some time. CrashFree should back me up if anything happens.

Updating the BIOS is suggested if the problem may be the BIOS, its not recommended if your system is working fine as it is. If it aint broke dont fix it

If so then that's definitely not the prob.

try booting in safe mode and then restarting

I did that yesterday. It did restart, suprisingly. I don't know if it'll do it again (sorry, just on the old comp at the moment so I can't really go and reboot it again to see).

Oh, and I emailed ASUS yesterday - man were the replies fast! The person said she was unsure if this reboot issue is related to the BIOS, but she did say to flash it just to test to see if it fixes it. And suprisingly, she also found out that the current CPU I'm using, would function much better with the new BIOS.

So maybe sometime I should give it a flash. I really wanna enjoy this new comp when I can, so I may do it a wee later in future.

But it's pretty obvious what will happen - it will either be "fixed" or it won't be "fixed".

I don't exactly want to flash it just yet (don't ask me when!). However, I did do a reboot from safe mode and it works there.

Computer shut down as usual when it was supposed to reboot after flashing. I then tried turning the computer on but a few seconds later it kept shutting itself down. However, I turned the power switch off then back on and it's now boot up fine (what I was just saying was I thought I corrupted it, but it's fine).

My mate thinks it's a BIOS setting.

Emailed ASUS, should get a reply tomorrow.
