Layers

Ok I am trying to understand and use the layers in BHD. I know how to name them. I know where to locate them. I don't know how to assign a point at which to make a layer or to "save" a layer. confusing to me. I have been just saving the map with different versions as the map grows. Seems like this is unnessesary.
Anyone know how this well enough to explainit or have a link to a video tutorial?

When you select items and go to the item properties, you can specify which layer you want to assign the item to in the top right corner.

All layers do is help you keep items organized so that its easier to work - for example if I'm building a two level tower i'll do something like this:

layer 2: Walls making up lower section of tower
layer 3: Items that make up the flooring of level 1 (especially if using wooden planks)
layer 4: Any items that are on level 1 (armory, decor, etc)

layer 5: walls making up tower to level 2
layer 6: items that make up flooring of level 2
layer 7: items that are placed on level 2
layer 8: walls that complete the tower
layer 9: roof of tower.

This way, if I need to work on level 1 after I had finished the tower, all I got to do is hide layers 4-9 and it gets rid of all that other stuff that just get in the way and make it next to impossible to work on lower items.

Or for maps that are single level, such as a battle ground re-creation that is closed in I may do some thing like:

layer 1: walls making up enclosed area
layer 2: PSP makers
layer 3: Player spawn makers
layer 4: Area triggers
layer 5: Foilage
layer 6: way points for moving vehicles
layer 7: Misc. Decorations

Then hiding any of the specified layers will remove it from screen so that it isn't so cluttered.

Every thing by default is assigned to layer 1.

How you end up using layers is upto you - no matter what layer you assign an item too, and even if you have the layer hidden, when you export the map all items will be visible in the map.

It is purely there just to help you keep things organized in the mission editor.
