Try not to skimp on the features. I did this with my first laptop because I was only going to use it for "Internet and writing papers" but soon wanted to do more and more things that it just wasen't powerful enough to do.
Make sure it has 2GB of memory 120GB+ Hard drive. Dual Core CPU Try and find a laptop with a dedicated graphics gpu instead of intergrated.. Unless your positive you will not be doing any graphics intensive things.

i have a Dell for personal use and a HP for work, tbh i barely use them at all.
both are mid spec so not really powerful enough to do demanding stuff and screen res does not go large enough forr my taste. i just dont want to use them, at work it's too much hassle to carry around and keep powering on and off for the short time i might need it. on the note of carrying them around, the above are not really spectacularly big but i'd really love a black macbook http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...family/macbook small, powerful, looks good, can cope with any app u want to throw at it, apart from gaming which i could never do on a laptop anyway. |

HP has the lowest rated tech support of all major computer manufacturers
Dell has one of the highest. I want the dell XPS M1530 or something like that

Have 2 HPs and a Mac Book Pro.
1. HP 17" Laptop - 1 Gig Ram - 2.4 Ghz - 80 Gb HDD - had to get rebuild due to defect - Guest laptop 2. HP 15" Laptop - 1 Gig Ram - 2.4 Ghz - 80 Gb HDD - Gets warm so need alternate power source - Use it for work 3. Apple's MacBook Pro - Dual Code - Install 2 Gig Ram - 150 Gb HDD - My main laptop at home. I would recommend getting a Mac Book Pro. Once you get Mac you'll never look back at other OS. ;-) |

If you are looking at one with an Intel Core2Duo 2.4 GHZ spend a bit more and jump to the 2.5 since the L1 or L2 cache doubles

I haven't exactly tried to drain it from standby so I can't say exactly. I have however charged it fully, put it in standby and went to class for 5 hours. When I got home I opened it up and had 70% battery left.
I have a 6 cell (standard) battery.. my battery usually lasts 3+ hours if im just using it for surfing the web.. If I turn off the WiFi it adds about another 20 to 30 minutes. Hibernation also works pretty well for me on Vista sp1. It takes about 8 or so seconds but it's faster then starting it and all my programs are already loaded so there is no additional loading times. Doing this with XP was a PITA for me because I would always have to reset my wireless adapters becauce they would always take forever to reconnect or i'd have to reboot before they did... Could have just been the laptop though
