Briton Kidnapped In Iraq
Updated: 20:32, Sunday November 27, 2005
British aid worker Norman Kember is among four Westerners kidnapped in Iraq.
The humanitarian workers are reported to have been taken hostage in Baghdad on Saturday.
Brigadier Hussein Kamal, the deputy interior minister for intelligence, said he had received a report that two Canadians and a Briton working for a relief organisations had been kidnapped.
A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office added: "We are aware of reports of a missing British national in Iraq and are investigating urgently."
The missing Briton has been named as Norman Kember and officials say his next of kin have been informed of his kidnapping.
The Canadian government identified two of the workers as Canadians, one as British and one American.
Ministry official Dan McTeague said the ministry was informed of the kidnappings by the Canadian embassy in Jordan.
He refused to say who the aid workers were working for.
However, he said Canada's embassy in Amman and Ottawa were in contact with the organisation and were ready to provide assistance.
The Canadian government has advised its citizens, including humanitarian workers, not to travel to Iraq since April 2004.
Insurgents in Iraq have kidnapped more than 220 foreigners and killed nearly 40.
Fourteen are believed still held or reported missing.
