PUTIN: 'SHOOT-TO-KILL'
Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued shoot-to-kill orders after deadly clashes between soldiers and rebels forces.

At least 12 civilians and about 10 police officers have reportedly died during battles in the south of the country.

Mr Putin has ordered the southern Russian city of Nalchik to be sealed off and said anyone putting up armed resistance to police should be shot dead.

Deputy Interior Minister Alexander Chekalin confirmed: "The president ordered that not a single fighter be allowed to leave the city limits.

"Anyone who puts up resistance with weapons in his hands must be liquidated."

Officials estimate 50 gunmen have perished in the clashes across the Kabardino-Balkaria province's capital. A further 84 people have been wounded.

Fighting erupted when groups attacked an airport, three police stations and a government building.

The battles spread and officials said hostages have been taken at one police station.

Chechen rebel forces allegedly claimed responsibility for the co-ordinated attacks.

Black smoke billowed from a school caught in the cross-fire, as panic-stricken parents searched for their children.

Many heard intense shooting from automatic rifles and grenade-launchers.

The battles were reportedly sparked by the detention of a group of adherents to the radical Wahhabi sect of Islam.

Kabardino-Balkaria has seen a rise in Islamic extremist movements and violence targeting police and soldiers.
